Thanks, James. I am struggling against this latest threat and it says something that I'm the only one who raised it on a forum attended by thousands of Canadian firearm owners. I thought oldstarfire or you would have been first on the barricades. Why weren't you?
Canada "close to being lost", if accurate, is because of a public malaise, fed-up citizens who've let go their responsibilities to their family, friends, community and country, demonstrated forcefully by the issue we're discussing: silence on a critical public issue.
Don't look to bogeymen to blame, as you've done. You separate the Conservative Party as the only one to save us from addle-headed authoritarianism. The Conservative Party of Canada split in twain last week at its annual meeting here in Halifax. Not a peep on gun control either.
I'll let your reflections of how I think to pass. I am proud of my father who was a communist when anyone not thinking of a better system at that time wasn't thinking at all. He was in his late teens and early 20s during the Great Depression.
The only reflection I care to make of your family is that it has always been notably progressive and pragmatic, its most influential contemporary member acclaimed as a Red Tory, "the most significant premier of Manitoba in the 20th century."
As for my "socialist leanings", here's Krugman in NYT today:
"By now everyone knows that conservatives routinely yell “socialist!” whenever anyone proposes doing something to help less fortunate members of our society — which is a key reason so many Americans now think favorably of socialism: If guaranteed health care is socialism, bring it on."
