There is far more to it than that A-D list. I seriously doubt that the percentage of disturbed people in the population has changed in any significant way. But a minuscule portion of them now have the capability to become highly visible. Video games are a drop in the bucket in light of the pervasive and glorified violence in our society. A total lack of respect for fellow citizens, not to mention fellow humans, is obvious at every level and in every aspect of our society giving example, support, and encouragement to anyone deranged enough feel in need of striking back at whatever they identify as hostile.
The Anti's seize on that to vilify a mechanical contrivance that aids the nutters. Big surprise! The government and leading gun owner organizations (the paragons of paranoia) refuse to act in any problem solving manner. Big Surprise! Some sort of FUNDED response to the situation would certainly be welcome but is unlikely since there is not a politician alive that wants anyone to have a firearm and letting the situation persist is a simple way to ultimately achieve that.
Violence is institutional in current society. Removing the firearms will not solve that. It may lower the body count by shootings but that is such a tiny number that the only impact will be different focus on the news.

BTW - the mentally ill who were/are tossed on the street are there because POLITICIANS are encouraged to not fund social programs - - which is what the former mental health facilities were. California under Reagan, or maybe it was Nancy's astrologer, was first among many to see to that de-funding.
