I can measure pits in the bore too....after I have run a backbore reamer down the bores and the pits are gone, then I can tell you how deep they were. Seriously though....a smith that has done lots of bore work and has removed lots of pitting in the past can have a very good idea of the depth of pitting, though that is very different from measuring it.
