Just a guess, incoming birds one shot then reload so you have both barrels loaded for the next pass top first would be an advantage on O/U guns. Only have one O/U & compared to my SXS guns the bottom barrel reload always seems akward. I read about recoil on 2nd shot bottom barrel advantage, I prefer to remount the 2nd shot, which makes it irrelevant.
Point is different shooters see different advantages & no doubt Boss built whatever the buyer wanted

Opening an over under so the top barrel only can be loaded can cause a gun to be only partially cocked. I gave the Boss a good look, but driving to Denver would be required for me to bid. What was the hammer price?

OK, I looked at the realized prices and reviewed the pictures. $18,400 including BP is a great deal, pits and all. The wall thickness is not excessive considering the 7 pound, 7 ounce weight. A call to Boss probably eliminated all concerns for the new owner. I once helped a friend buy a pair of early Beretta SO3EELL game guns that were rusted beyond all hope. He turned them over to someone we all know and the guns are now mint condition. The Boss will probably get the same treatment, or not.

IMO the best gun in that auction was the Churchill Premiere SxS. A new and unused hand-made London sidelock. It would cost $100K to have that gun made today.

The only Woodward I could find in that Auction is described as having "3 or 4 dents on the left barrel." Had a 1 3/8 inch wooden stock extension. Was black powder proofed. Plain finished - no engraving outside of the arcaded fences. Did not make the Estimate even after taxes and buyers premium commission was added.

I agree the Woodward was one of the best buys in the auction. About $5700, an absolute steal for that gun.
