Steve's photos remind me I have been meaning to build a bench horse. I use a free standing support like shown in his pictures for one end of a gun but more ways to hold things is always helpful. I seem to vaguely remember a tip in gunmaker for increasing the usefulness of a standard vise by using a pipe and some custom made wood blocks. I think Dennis Potter wrote about it. I might need to did that up over the holiday, it looked handy.
