How taboo is it to rust brown a set of steel barrels? Thoughts, opinions?

Some were blackened and others were browned when new. If I were redoing a set of barrels, I would return to them as they were when new.

Those are my 2 cents. Take it for what its worth.

Must not be taboo at all. Too many of my old American Classics have a nice brown patina for that...Geo

I see browned Damascus guns all the time, but a browned fluid steel gun is something Ive never seen. Brown fluid steel barrels would be viewed (by me) as a gun neglected and left to rust. Im sure thats not the look you want to effect.

I thought about that too. But the devil is in the detail, I thought about dark chocolate barrels instead of the black.
Thanks guys!

To get deep, dark brown finish how much rusting are you going to do? Dont know how happy Id be with not converting the Fe2 to Fe3 by boiling. The later is more stable I understand. But its your gun and do what you want. Might be an interesting experiment.

Thanks Jon, my only concern with the gun is a few loose solder points and flooding with water, I would be afraid to get a bunch of water between the ribs by soaking many times, browning was just a thought seeing the dark chocolate vs the black peeked my interest!
