Ed;
Remember when the Union commander left the fort he left the flag flying, there was no official surrender. The troops left the fort heading for another cache of arms & ammunition. Anyone who raised their hands did so as an individual act trying to save their hide until the reached the cache of arms to continue fighting there was no "Official" surrender. "IF" Forrest had desired the complete annihilation of these troops he could Have left the flag flying up until they were wiped out. He did not do so, as soon as he got inside the fort he lowered the flag & ran up the Confederate flag, thus stopping the shooting.

All of us "Good Ole Southern Boys" are not glad we lost, just to set the record straight. Many of us believe the Union would have been re-established after a time, but under much better conditions than what occured. Under the Auspices of Lincoln this war, in spite of his "Infamous" Gettysburg Address, Wiped out States & Individual Rights from the face of United States, the principals on which it was founded & put them under the control of a central Government.
