ED;
The Difference between Forrest & Sherman was that Forrest killed or allowed the killing of "Soldiers" in battle. Sherman on the other hand allowed the killing, rape & other abuses of "Civilians" who were not actively engaged in battle; BIG DIFFERENCE.

As to Fort Pillow Forrest, following the war, was Court Martialed & brought to trial by the US Army & found not guilty, his actions on that occasion were deemed to be simply warfare. The actual so called Massacre was done by his Adjutant Major Anderson who, under orders from Forrest, was to fire on any Union Soldier until their flag came down. Forrest himself lowered the Flag thus halting the firing. The Union soldiers themselves were moving from the fort down by the river where they had a cache of arms & cartridges, they did not lower their flag for surrender, thus they had "NOT" surrendered. That was the major question, were soldiers killed after their surrender, the answer was a big fat "NO".

2, agree with your post for the most part, except there are reports that unarmed black and white federal soldiers were shot with their hands up and trying to surrender...the info i was hoping that someone else would bring up, is the origins of those federal soldiers...many of the black soldiers were recently freed slaves and as such were considered by the confederate government to be in servile insurrection, the harshest legal punishment being summary execution...many of the white federal soldiers were unionst from the mountainous regions of the surrounding border states...as such they were considered as traitors and worse...the brutal war in kansas and missouri, prior to 1861, spread east and south into kentucky, arkansas and tennessee...ever hear of the hatfield and the mccoy feud? this was the same thing, but on a much larger scale...

and, forrest's tactics included psychological warfare...the killings at fort pillow may have been allowed, in order to discourage local men, black and white from joining the union army...when asked why he sometimes practiced brutality, forrest reply was "to put the scare into erm"...

Truth is Lonesome, most southerners now-a-days are glad our team lost the war with the result the Union was saved. We however reserve the right to tease you yankee boys...Geo

Ed;
Remember when the Union commander left the fort he left the flag flying, there was no official surrender. The troops left the fort heading for another cache of arms & ammunition. Anyone who raised their hands did so as an individual act trying to save their hide until the reached the cache of arms to continue fighting there was no "Official" surrender. "IF" Forrest had desired the complete annihilation of these troops he could Have left the flag flying up until they were wiped out. He did not do so, as soon as he got inside the fort he lowered the flag & ran up the Confederate flag, thus stopping the shooting.

All of us "Good Ole Southern Boys" are not glad we lost, just to set the record straight. Many of us believe the Union would have been re-established after a time, but under much better conditions than what occured. Under the Auspices of Lincoln this war, in spite of his "Infamous" Gettysburg Address, Wiped out States & Individual Rights from the face of United States, the principals on which it was founded & put them under the control of a central Government.

agreed, if you read and analyse the words of lincoln's gettysburg address, it could have just as easily been written by jeff davis, after chancellorsville and the tragic death of stonewall jackson...that is the tragedy of that war and i think most wars...

if anything good did come from the war, then it was the abolition of human slavery...however, it could have also been accomplished without loss of life or property as was done in brazil...

and keep in mind that the civil war was not so much about preserving the union and freeing the slaves, as it was about money and power...

Ed, on that we are in total agreement. Keep in mind also the Color of Slavery was not Black & White but Green. One of the ten Wealthiest slave owners in the US at this point of time (prior to the War) was in Fact a free Black. He ran a large sugarcane operation. Also there were quite a few Cherokees who owned slaves. They weren't all owned by us EVIL Southerners.
