ED;
The Difference between Forrest & Sherman was that Forrest killed or allowed the killing of "Soldiers" in battle. Sherman on the other hand allowed the killing, rape & other abuses of "Civilians" who were not actively engaged in battle; BIG DIFFERENCE.
As to Fort Pillow Forrest, following the war, was Court Martialed & brought to trial by the US Army & found not guilty, his actions on that occasion were deemed to be simply warfare. The actual so called Massacre was done by his Adjutant Major Anderson who, under orders from Forrest, was to fire on any Union Soldier until their flag came down. Forrest himself lowered the Flag thus halting the firing. The Union soldiers themselves were moving from the fort down by the river where they had a cache of arms & cartridges, they did not lower their flag for surrender, thus they had "NOT" surrendered. That was the major question, were soldiers killed after their surrender, the answer was a big fat "NO".
