It is well to note that as late as Lee's surrender at Appomattox the majority of his Troops were not in favor of surrendering, but would have preferred to keep fighting. Rhett Butler not withstanding I do not see the reason as being Arrogance Stupidity then. A people should know when they are beaten. as i recall, rhett did spend some time at west point...when the end was near and the cause lost, what did rhett do...well, he left scarlett, melanie and the baby in the rain and went off to join hood's army on its way to disaster in tennessee...in addition to artillery skills, perhaps rhett also learned about: duty, honor and country...

and do not be too critical of sherman...he and forrest viewed war pretty much the same, a mean, brutal business...cept forrest was far better at the business of killing...and he was not burdened with a professional military education and did not delude himself with a peacetime officer and a gentleman persona...
or simply put "war meanings fighting and fighting means killing"
surprised no one has brought up fort pillow here...

When you came on this forum you were a genial fellow, talked about specific doubles, and contributed worthwhile information. Sometime, along about the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013, your tone of posting changed from genial and considerate to cynical, smart azz, and downright rude. I know by your posts that you are a Marine and did at least one tour in the Middle east. I appreciate that, and that is not condescension. I am a vet, too, and take every opportunity to thank other vets for their service. Thank you. Don't know how the deployment in 2012 went, but if it was tough, know that you have my appreciation for your sacrifice. Bottom line..............you have given for our freedom, and I am grateful. Though we do not even come close to seeing eye to eye about a lot of things, not the least of which is W.T. Sherman, know that you have my appreciation for your service, and I will try to remember that when you post something I strongly disagree with. All my best, SRH
