forrest was the spiritual leader of the original klan, made up of local self defense vigilante groups, that came into existence in order to combat the excesses of radical federal reconstruction policies...when federal troops began to go home, forrest ordered the klan dissolved...and soon became an advocate for reconciliation with black citizens...
