Gentlemen, I have ordered and received the original build sheet for a 1924 Boss soon to be in my arsenal. There are a number of interesting features. I have few questions so that I might better be able to understand the original spec (quotes are from the sheet):

1. "Shooting Right 160; Shooting Left 200" -- What size British shot would this have been so I can determine the original constriction?

2. "Drop Hand Foreend" No idea here.

3. "Pulls 4 lbs. bare, extra springs to weigh 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2 lbs. per his letter" He must have been persnickety about his trigger pulls, as this seems to indicate he wanted extra springs to vary the trigger weight. Presumably these would be interchangeable...with some effort?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. The gun is incoming so it could be a few months before I have pictures to post.

Impossible to know without the hang tag Owen.
English 6s are 291/oz. If the left barrel was full choke, and the pattern load was 1 oz., then 291 X 70% = 204 pellets. Right a tight Mod 291 X 55% = 160.

Dr. Drew, I believe I have read that the standard charge of 1oz English #6's were used to pattern test unless otherwise stated. Of course I am no expert. It will arrive in a case and I am hopeful that the charge card is present and that the extra springs are there, but I am preparing for the worst!

Mike, some other specs are: original 28" barrels, weight 6-9, file cut rib (not my preference), DT. Current chokes measure Modified, Extra Full per vendor. I'll be at the Southern, but unfortunately won't have the gun in hand. I seem to remember you have a Boss from this era as well. I hope you are enjoying it.

Probably tested with English number 6 shot at 270 pellets to the ounce. Could have been regulated for 1 ounce, 1 1/16th. ounce or 1 1/8th. ounce. (Time to get the pocket calculator out). Boss should have details on file. It may specify the powder used (now almost certainly obsolete) and of course it will have been in a paper roll crimp case with card and felt wads. Often the person ordering the gun would specify what cartridge load and pattern he would expect and Boss would regulate accordingly. Time to get on the pattern plate with as variety of ammunition.

Sorry Drew but as I understand it No. 6 shot is 270 to the ounce. Lagopus.....

Here's Hallowell's chart
http://www.hallowellco.com/shot_size_chart.htm

"Eley Shooter's Diary", 2005, gives different numbers:
4 3.1mm, .12", 170/oz
5 2.8mm, .11", 220/oz
6 2.6mm, .10", 270/oz

Yet another chart
…………US…………….....………UK……….....……...Italian
………mm…...inches….…mm……inches………mm……inches
4……..3.3…….0.13………..2.8…….0.11………3.1……..0.122
5……..3.0…….0.12………..2.67…...0.105…….2.9……..0.1142
6……..2.8…….0.11………..2.54…...0.10………2.7……..0.1063
7……..2.54…..0.10………..2.4….…0.095……..2.5……..0.0984
8……..2.3…….0.09………..2.29…...0.09………2.3……..0.0906

I still think y'all are just messing with us wink but it did take us Colonials awhile to get it together too

And BTW the SAAMI standards are fairly relaxed
1) Pellet size variations allow for +/- one pellet size (+/- .010" dia.) of variation in game loads.
A No. 6 (.110") game load could contain pellets ranging in size from No. 5 (.120") down to No. 7 (.100").
On target loads it allows for +/- ½ pellet size (+/- .005" dia.) of variation; a No. 8 (.090") target load could contain pellets ranging in size from No. 7 1/2 (.095") down to No. 8 1/2 (.085").

2) Load weight variations can range from +4% to -7% in game loads and +3% to -5% in target loads; about +/- 1/8 oz. of variation allowed per shell.

3) Pellet counts per ounce can vary by +/- 10% for both game and target loads.

I'm guessing 1 1/16 ounces of English #6. You do the math.

Very interesting. The original owner was an Englishman living at Reigate Heath, so we can presume he requested a period English loading. Here is the type of cartridge, can't make out the brand exactly...

Bill may be correct. 42 gr. "Schultze" would be 3 Dr. Eq.

Forest & Stream, September 24, 1910 listed several standard British loads and pressures from The Field
https://books.google.com/books?id=mEkcAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA510
42 gr. (3 Dr. Eq.) Schultze with 1 1/8 oz. shot = 9,598 psi (by Burrard’s conversion)
33 gr. (3 Dr. Eq.) “E.C.” Improved No. 3 with 1 1/16 oz. = 8,758 psi
33 gr. Smokeless Diamond with 1 1/16 oz. = 7,952 psi
33 gr. Red Star (New Explosives Co., Stowmarket) with 1 1/16 oz. = 8,322 psi

Major Sir Gerald Burrard in the 1944/1947 Second Edition of The Modern Shotgun, Vol. III “The Gun and the Cartridge”, states during WWI the standard 12g load was dropped by law (to conserve the supplies of lead and powder) to 1 oz. 3 Dram.
After the war, the standard for 12g 2 1/2” shells became 1 1/16 oz. with 42 grains (Old) “Schultze” Bulk (3 Dram), 36 grains “E.C. No. 2 (Improved)” or 33 grains Imperial Chemical Industries (Eley & Kynoch Cartridges) “Smokeless Diamond” powder.
