Dave-

Well done! Here is what I did to make my Meriden fit me. The gun no longer had the original butt plate, so I had no reservations about altering it to fit me. Before adding the pitch spacer and increasing the length of pull I was not hitting much. I am not sure if a previous owner had changed the pitch to suit them, but it was all wrong for me. After the alteration, it was like magic. Almost everything I was looking at started to fall or break after pulling the trigger, making me a true believer that fit is very important.

I've taken mine apart and I'm cleaning up. I'm going to put a pad on too (but I'll save the butt plate. I'll post a pic when I get it done in a week or two.

Interesting my locks have coil springs unlike the photo show earlier. Water table is stamped S30 so everything looks to be original.

When I'm done I'm going to put some low pressure loads through it but i thing I'll mount it in a cleaning vise and pull the trigger with a string first!

Here are Sweep's brl stamps, which I was anxious to see. Cockerill Sambre was the major Belgian steel maker, equivalent to Krupp or Vickers, but I'll need to research their mark.
http://www.hfinster.de/StahlArt2/archive-CockerillLiege-en.html

"Seraing is in Liège province, Wallonia region, eastern Belgium. It lies along the Meuse River, 6 miles (10 km) upstream from Liège. Seraing is a historic hub of Belgium's iron, steel, and machine-building industries. In 1817 the English industrialist John Cockerill founded in Seraing what was to become one of the largest ironmaking and machinery complexes in Europe, Cockerill-Sambre, and was the first to use the Bessemer process in steel production (1863)."

Some Browning patent Fabrique-Nationale-Herstal very early versions of the A5 shipped to the U.S. between 1903 and 1909 are marked Cockerill Steel.

That looks as much like a twisted snake as a 'S'??

The Belgian steel industry has English roots. In addition to Cockerill, in 1830 Thomas Bonehill set up a forging mill.

If I had to guess on the "S" I would say the Syndicat liégeois pour la fabrication des armes de guerre, The Liege Trade Union of Gun makers.

Could that S mean that they are steel barrels? The water table is stamped S 30 and the serial # on one side and 18 on the other.

Sweep-

I think you are correct that the S mark meant that the barrels were fluid steel and not T (twist) or D (damascus). Meriden marked these shotguns with the type of barrel and length on the water table.

Additionally, my barrels are marked with a "T" near the fore arm attachment lug whereas those with fluid steel barrels are likely similarly marked with the letter "S". If someone has a higher quality damascus (two or three blade) I would bet money it has the letter D were mine has the letter T, the those with fluid steel have the letter S.
