The S30 in Rev's photo is definitely the indication of a Steel barrel, 30" when it left the factory and like Doug says. a Damascus barrel will have a D, plus the length. I have owned at least one of all the marks ,S-Steel, T-Twist, K-Krupp, and D-Damascus.. I have had several high grade Meridens and the show some very high quality engraving, super wood and workmanship equal to any American SxS and for reasons unknown to the Hunter Brothersn no cracks behind the lockplates... Good to know the Meriden is not prone to cracks...I was worried that putting this 100 year old shotgun back into service would send me looking for a good stock repair man! If someone knows where the barrel makers marks were most likely placed on these guns from the guns that have them, I'll take a closer look at mine, but all I can find are serial numbers, the barrel length and the single letter T designation for the twist barrels. There is the number 81 on the water table (I have no idea what that signifies).

Here is a photo of the barrel flats, water table and fore end iron:

Interesting my locks have coil springs unlike the photo show earlier. Water table is stamped S30 so everything looks to be original.

When I'm done I'm going to put some low pressure loads through it but i thing I'll mount it in a cleaning vise and pull the trigger with a string first!

Dave-

I would like to see some photos of your coil spring locks. Did you find getting them off the stock and receiver an easy operation as did I?

Your Meriden is a bit younger than mine. Also, I have seen some Meridens with fore end latches, mine lacks that latch.

The 1908 catalogue touts the self locking device in the fore end that dispenses with the latch. I wonder if this was an evolution from those with a latch, or if it caused problems in the early guns and was replaced with the more traditional latch.

As for the locks, in 1908 catalogue, both the hammerless and hammer gun locks are illustrated and both use the old fashioned V spring. So not long after my shotgun was made and not long before your shotgun was made, there may have been a transition to the coil spring.

As far as shooting the Meriden, you do as you wish…I fired mine from the shoulder first shot, but then anyone shooting twist damascus has to have a screw loose, right (+700 rounds and counting by the way)?

OK Doug (and anyone else who cares) here's a photo of my coil spring side locks. And a coupel of photos of the Merdiden gun after clean up and butt pas installation. I know I probably turned a $400 gun into a $200 gun but it now fits quite well and I keeps me from tearing into one of my Parkers and doing real damage.

Dave-

Very interesting, Meriden got rid of both of the V springs in your lock. Thanks for taking the time to share the photographs! You did a very nice job on your recoil pad too (looks much better than mine I would say).

The value of a shotgun is in the eye of the user and I would say by making the shotgun fit you; you have turned a $400 shotgun into a priceless one. That may sound odd, but my Meriden is not for sale, so that makes it priceless in my book. I think you will feel the same way about yours and I can't wait for your range report. It might take you a little while to adjust to the old shotgun. As I mentioned in an earlier post, you may find the lock time a bit slower than you are used to, but if you are smooth with it and try some fast 7/8oz loads, I bet you will find that you can hit with this shotgun as well as (if not better than) any other.

I think we can add another name to the list of the Meriden Company's products: "Berkshire". If a person was looking for parts for a Meriden, Utica Special or A.J. Aubrey side lock, this listing on Auction Arms is for what I am pretty certain is a Meriden firearm and the condition of the shotgun should make it an affordable parts gun for someone.
