Dan, another great looking rifle saved from obscurity. You and John need to get together and front a store (although John already has that covered) for all of your "surplus" RIA acquisitions. I like the overall look and often wonder about that style of safety. Being one of the 12% that think with the right side of our mind, they look awkward as hell to me. I can see where a RH person would find it convenient. I wonder of the color difference is due to thumb rub operating the safety over the last 50 or so years? I would think it would darken the wood, but perhaps cleaning revealed a lighter tone. These safeties are still available. Thanks for sharing and thanks to Fred for posting the pictures.

The second(Greener type)safety is called a stalking safety, and is not on all German rifles, but is not too uncommon on older ones.

Purely specualtion, but...could the Greener safety and the scope mount have been added at the same time. Is there the same lack of stock fish under the side mount?
Claw mounts may have been the norm at the time of the rifle's conversion.

Nice idea on the barrel breech work, eh?

Nice rifle, nice safe number also.

From the amount of clearance shown between bolt handle and scope, I suspect that the bolt was originally unaltered and that the unnecessary alteration took place in the US. The quality of workmanship on the handle doesn't match that of the rest of the rifle.

However, that is a fairly easy fix, and the scope could probably be lowered with the substitution of lower rings.

SDH, no the scope mount inletting is not lighter in color.
Thaine, I have another rifle with this type safety but it is on the other side.
xausa, an unaltered bolt will not clear the scope so I suspect the bolt is original. It has enough clearance to allow the leather caps to clear the bolt.

Bryndon, check your PM.
