Pristine and cracker barrel are not the only two grades in used shotguns. A look at auction descriptions confirms it. The vast majority fall in the well used category. Handling such non mint but fully functional specimens is enought to convey the experience and let the buyer decide for him/her self if it is what he is after either to use or collect.
Museums that display only do not convey the tactile sense of a gun. Handling a Darne V22, for example, is a whole different process than simply looking at one. And each process might lead to a wholly different conclusion.

Ok, Im going to let you have the last word after this, but shotgunlover, you are pissing into the wind if you think there will ever be a Tactile Shotgun Museum. Its really a moot point, so to say.......unless you have the means to start this yourself, which from what you have said, does not appear to be the case. Also, I would like to add, if you go to a bespoke gunmaker and shell out the coin for a brand new, shiny elitist and best quality piece (or even one of their preowned guns), the gunmakers will let you shoot one of their guns to make sure it is what you want.

To build a museum maybe not, but I regulary let people shoot my best guns (two English, one Italian) to get a feel of them at the range, to verify if all the hype is borne out when pulling the trigger. I do not let anyone touch the Citori though.

....My socialist friens regard me as a rabid capitalist....
....My opinion re an antidote is a "tactile shotgun museum" where a visitor can, for a modest fee, handle and study every type of shotgun, especially the high end ones. Might even shoot them, so he can judge for himself what he really likes and wants. If the first friend mentioned above had such an experience he would not have bought the 12/20 that kicks him like an ****hole and someone else who really likes it would have had it at a reasonable price.
Sounds like rational capitalism to me. Other than maybe the lego museum, do you know of any examples of interactive high end collectibles museums? It's good of you to let folks try the nice guns, do the socialists ask first, offer to pay for shells? It's an awkward rationale.

Lonesome Roads
The verdict? Depends on what is pitted against them. Many are surprised at how much more satisfying a well used Stevens pump is to operate compared to a best SXS. That tactile thing again...
Craigd, in some private sculpture collections in France and Italy, shown for profit, the public were allowed to touch the exhibits, the logic being that it is impossible to appreciate sculpture unless you touch it. One exhibit we were allowed to touch, among others, Picasso's bronzae goat sculpture the one with a spigot in the rear, an item presumably more valuable than any best gun.
Do they offer to pay for shells? For the 12 gauges they use their own, for the 2 1/2 inch 410 Cogswell they use mine since they are not normally available in shops.

He is actually in Australia, craigd. His guns are mostly flint & cap lock with real quality centre fire of about a hundred years old. Collectors license is required for doing this, & all guns federally registered.
Old man now but do you think that he will sell me a good shootable flint double ? O.M
