I'm not sure. It is easy to turn your hulls down to 2 7/8". A wooden dowel with an xacto blade stuck at the appropriate depth will do the trick by inserting into the hull and making a few turns. I reload on a MEC 600 Jr with a short shell adapter on the crimp. I only have two 10 bores, an 1881 lifter Parker and a top lever Parker. The first is on a #2 frame with .030 constriction in both barrels and the other is on a #4 frame and is really tightly choked. I put SpredR inserts in a lot of my reloads to develop the pattern at sporting clays distance. I mark the primers with a black marker while they are still in the tray so I will know the difference. Ballistic Products "The Might 10 Gauge" has many 3 1/2" loads. The lowest pressure for lead I found was 9300 psi @ 1300 fps or a Bismuth load at 9200 psi going 1245 fps. All the loads I gave above were for lead shot. There is different data for Bismuth. Harry

hOjO,
If you would like to try some 10X12 Gauge Mates, let me know. I've got several sets and your welcome to borrow a set.

Thanks Harry....How could I adapt that load to a 3 & 1/2" Federal hull without fear of raising the pressure too much ? If you don't have abrupt forcing cones in your guns the easiest way would be to insert the shorter shells and pulling the trigger(s).

That does seem simple enough...I cut down 2 & 3/4 12 guage to 2 &1/2". I'm sure the ten won't be any more trouble. I was told that it might pattern better with a chamber length hull. I'm still waiting on Jerry's email.

jOe,
You can simply add 1/2" more filler material to the half inch already listed in HM Collins' load. It will do nothing but lower the pressure and velocity, if anything. Make sure you use the light fillers(you should be able to crumble them in your fingers), not the hard card-waxed card filler wads.
Best, Mark

Joe, I have been loading for my 1883 Greener #1. Remington SP hulls cut back to 2 7/8" Fed 209A primers 36 grains of Blue Dot SP10 wad 1 5/8 oz of lead shot 1/2 scoop of buffer 8 grains ( have tried 3 different mixes scoop provided by Ballistic products )plain grex works well as does mixture #47 for my use 11 gauge overshot Circle Fly card Crimp enclosure I regret to say that I have not had it pressure tested however the Lyman shotshell #2 states that a similar load ( hull, wad, load,) with 40 grains of blue dot provides 8110 LUP and 1275 fps This load patterns very tight @ 40 yards and although some would doubt the claim it patterns 60% plus at 60 yards nice even distribution of #2 shot. I am also using some wads from Ballistic products but to date have not patterned them. This is the Deci Max. My gun has stated 10 gauge chambers, 9 gauge bores and 11 gauge muzzles. As to actual constriction I am at 0.060" in both barrels.
Hope this helps a little - as always use at your own risk and discretion.
I wish you good shooting and excellent patterns. Slate
