I'm looking for a source of reloading data for a lightweight (7 pound 3 ounce) 10 gauge Darne shotgun with 2-7/8 inch chambers. Specifically, I'd like to try to duplicate the RST fold crimp loads using once fired RST hulls, of which I have several hundred. Low enough pressure to use in my A. Hollis hammer gun with Damascus barrels would be a bonus.

Can any of you point me toward a source of data and components that might allow me to accomplish this? I have the MEC Jr. 10 gauge reloader with the short kit, so the press issue is solved.

There was a list of 10 2-7/8 loads over on the Parker site. Should come up on a search over there or does using google. 1/31/ 2012 thread. Most is dated but some is current. Thread ran about ten pages. Your load should be fairly easy to come up with. Also Sherman Bell had several 10 loads he came up when testing barrels. Those got added to that thread.

The Ballistic products 10 bore Manuel is fairly poor to me. But all you need is one good load.

It uses red dot, SP10, Win209, some fillers and it is good for Rem, RST and Federal hulls with pressure in the 6k to 7K range depending on the hull.

I use a cut down Federal hull, 19 gr Red Dot 1 1/8 oz shot. Remington SP 10 wad with a 16 G fiber filler wad bottom of the shot cup. Buy the fibers 1/2 inch split them down to size needed to get a good crimp. Recent Test of this load is on the PGCA web Site

This load from the Parker Forum is with a 6 point fold crimp. Really a great load and I use it all the time on my short 10's. Works with Remington, Federal and Cheddite hulls.

Fold crimp although I don't think it would make much difference.

I've been reloading the short 10 for years. Any 12ga load can be used in the 10 because of the larger chamber, the pressure will be less. Because I shoot the old Damascus SxS's I try and keep pressures under 8000psi, something you won't have to worry about with a new gun. The Darne may kick a bit so I'd try to keep payloads and velocity down. I use either 1 or 1 1/16oz loads around 1150fps for nice low recoil shooting. The fiber wads can be bought from www.circlefly.com Get the 16ga 1/2" cushion wad to go in the plastic wad. That way you can split it any length you want for proper load height for a good crimp. It goes in the bottom of the plastic wad before the shot. I found the 10ga hulls seem to be a bit thinner than other gauge shells so proper height of the load is important so you don't wrinkle the shell. For a fold crimp, if I remember at least a 1/2" is needed. It seems like too much when you first look at it. There's Precision Reloading, Grafs and Son, BPI, and Gamalial that all carry reloading supplies. I use 18grs of Clay Dot, RD or Promo, 20grs of American Select or GD, or 17grs of 700X for 1oz loads. For 1 1/8oz loads I personally would use 15grs of 700X, 18grs of Promo or RD,or 20grs of Green Dot. All those loads are at or under 8000psi in the 12 so they should be under 7000psi in a 10ga. A roll crimp usually has less pressure but IMHO they're a PITA. I only use them if I'm throwing away the hull, which I don't do with the 10, they cost too much if you have to buy new empties. I've use the above loads in my 1882 Remington, Parker hammer gun, and Lefever 10's. Good luck, hope I didn't ramble on too long. Paul

Most of what I know about short 10s learned from Paul & the guys on the Parker site. I Load 400 at a time feeding three 2 7/8 Tens. 350 or so 1 1/8 oz 19 Red Dot. Rest 1 1/4 oz 23 grs Green Dot. Wads the same 1 1/4 oz load split the 16 G fiber a bit thinner to make the stack height come out right.
