In Chuck's hands they are very effective bird guns.

One morning I watched him take three wild Kansas roosters over pointing dogs with his Ithaca 410. There was a foot of snow and the birds were sticking so the shots were short. But Chuck killed the birds dead dead dead.

I don't shoot well enough to do what Chuck did. But Chuck does.

I've got a little Birmy boxlock 28 gauge that shoots the same load as American 410s. It is pretty effective on pointed bobwhites. Haven't tried it on anything larger.

And besides, all the rational people are in line at the drive-thru at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Rational people do not chase semi-feral pointing dogs across the prairie in pursuit of their gallinaceous fare.
