I don't know the current components of Turtle Wax, but at one time some auto waxes contained a "rubbing" compound that was abrasive.

I would never use a car wax. As Gil said, most contain very fine abrasives that act as a polishing compound.

The colors that we see diminishing from handling our c.c guns are not some tangible substance that are rubbed off. They exist as a result of light reflection, and absorption, from the prismatic microscopic surface structure. Oscar Gaddy had pictures of that structure taken under extreme magnification, and it resembles what I will call a crystalline-like structure.

Handling wears away that structure, resulting in the loss of the colors we see being generated by it. Any coating we use only serves to protect that structure, thus preserving it's ability to generate the colors. I have never believed that light can change/alter that structure.

The poly I use is a model airplane fuelproof kind. No yellow that I've noticed. For cleaning I hose it down with brake cleaner and then wipe with acetone where I'm gonna spray. No prob with fish eye.

Couple times a year I wipe the whole gun down really well and wax the whole thing with Johnsons Floor Wax. Prolly don't need to do that actually where I live but as a Limey tradition I feel compelled and I know it don't hurt nothing.

I've heard and read here many times that sunlight would fade case colors. I'm beginning to think otherwise after reading these posts, especially after reading Stan's last post and what he learned from Oscar Gaddy.

I looked at this gun recently and figured it was sunlight that caused the fading on the right side of the receiver:

If you use a gun, it gets wear, everywhere. Don't worry about case colors getting worn off as you use your piece. It looks right. And I learned a long time ago to NOT handle the receiver with sweaty, dirty hands, or clean ones for that matter, when handling or carrying.

If it's a safe queen collectable, just keep it away from the sunlight, lightly oiled.

Sorry, John. Couldn't disagree more.

Which part, Gary?

I think it is Charles, actually. Or, Dr. Sane.

Many years ago, I was told right to my face by none other than Doug Turnbull that case colors can and will fade. It was not, in his opinion, from just sunlight, but the combination of sunlight and oxygen in the atmosphere that did it.

I believe you Ted, but it is interesting. The oxides will oxidize?

No. The oxides are still there, the color just isn't. When I had my Charlin done at Turnbull's, the advice he gave me was to coat them with something.

So, does light fade case colors or doesnt it? Everyone here has an opinion. What are the facts?
