I would never use a car wax. As Gil said, most contain very fine abrasives that act as a polishing compound.

The colors that we see diminishing from handling our c.c guns are not some tangible substance that are rubbed off. They exist as a result of light reflection, and absorption, from the prismatic microscopic surface structure. Oscar Gaddy had pictures of that structure taken under extreme magnification, and it resembles what I will call a crystalline-like structure.

Handling wears away that structure, resulting in the loss of the colors we see being generated by it. Any coating we use only serves to protect that structure, thus preserving it's ability to generate the colors. I have never believed that light can change/alter that structure.
