I find Formby's Tung Oil to be the best. It has a low solid content so goes on smoothly and self levels nicely. Dries relatively fast and is durable. Doesn't fill engraving with finish.

Hi Joe, Is it important to get all the oil off with something like acetone prior to treatment? Im guessing so, but dont know for sure.

To each his own, but my personal experience with case colors: leave them alone. Protective varnish of any kind can peel, and when it does, the case colors go with it. It ain't pretty.
If you use a gun, it gets wear, everywhere. Don't worry about case colors getting worn off as you use your piece. It looks right. And I learned a long time ago to NOT handle the receiver with sweaty, dirty hands, or clean ones for that matter, when handling or carrying.
If it's a safe queen collectable, just keep it away from the sunlight, lightly oiled. JR

What John said. If it's a using gun, use it and don't worry Hunter Arms used lacquer, mixed with 1/3 lacquer thinner, applied with cotton balls to protect the case colors Ithaca Flues Renaissance Wax helps if only displayed and occasionally handled

Sunlight should have no effect on case coloring. Two hand hold while carrying double at all times would go a long way toward protecting that finish on the action. The wear comes from carrying gun one handed when hand is placed on the action the bluing wear on front of action and back of pump tub magazine tube is caused the same way.

Ive read sunlight has no effect too but used to believe it did as well. I try to keep my hands off the colors and bluing too. Gloves sure help but arent always feasible esp when hot. Interesting lacquer may pull colors off. Is that for sure?
