Definitely not pine. Not sure about beech,I know Beretta used European walnut on some of their earlier guns as this one is on an O/U. I was curious as to what it might be.

If that's beech then is completely inked with faux grain. Beech looks nothing like that. Not remotely. If real grain then is something that grew in full sun, not slowly under a shade canopy like hardwoods I am familiar with.

Grain is real, not painted or stained. I wasn't too keen on beech, 870's use beech? If so its a different wood.

Brian, thanks for key word "hardwood", googled it, coles guns has a few like this on their site, I'll email them!

I have noticed that Beech wood can look vastly different from one stock to another.

As a general comparison:

That image is taken from a Beech stock for a Sauer bolt gun

Looks like the slash grain fir on the 1944 manufacture Gewehr 43 my Uncle Harley sent home after the Battle of the Bulge.

That image looks very similar, I thought it would have been more like this coming from Beretta

But chances are its beechwood, it is on a lower grade gun. Just curious as to what it is!

I have an old Husqvarna Mauser 98 actioned sporter, in .220 Swift, that was built back in the late '40s that, according to an old Gun Digest, was stocked in Arctic Birch. It seems to be an extremely stable wood. Only gun I've ever seen stocked with that wood.

Yes, it could also be birch. As I said, it strongly reminds me of some of the Husqvarnas I've owned in the past. I believe they did use birch on some of those guns as well. So I guess we can assume it is a hardwood of some variety and most likely not walnut.
