I happened upon a C Hellis 20 ga box lock the other day at Cabelas. 30 inch steel barrels!! They looked to have been honed but i didn't have my tools to measure them. Some slight pitting near the chambers. I expect they were reblued at some time. Straight stock, checkering completely worn off both butt and forearm. Semi fancy figured wood. No splits. The trigger guard and top tang were slightly proud of the wood and refinishing and recutting the checkering would only increase that. Tight on face. Engraving was rubbed and not sharp. Standard horn butt plate. London proofs not nitro proofed. Definitely under 6 lbs but no scale to measure it. And a delight to mount and swing. No serial number. Just a number on the barrel hook. No pictures. Problem was it was listed at CAN2500. I figured at an auction around $700-$900 and off the rack perhaps $1500 tops. Just wondering if my ball parking is in the ball park?

If you can figure out how Cabelas prices their used guns you are a better man than I. Prices are very inconsistent across the board. I think, however, your estimate is spot on, or at least within the realm of reality relative to how they’ve priced it.

After a certain amount of time (I think they told me 6 weeks), they will lower it or allow offers. You will see some lowered by $500 some lowered by $50. As eeb said, there is no rhyme or reason to the way they do things. But usually, if you wait them out long enough without anyone else jumping on it, you can get the price into a more realistic arena.

And my favorite line that I have heard from a number of Gun Library employees at different times from different locations "That's the lowest we can go. At this price we're not even making any money on it..." Sounds like something they must receive as part of their training to work there...

That said, I've purchased a number of guns from Cabela's Gun Library and I have been happy with the prices I paid and the guns themselves with the exception of one (which they gladly accepted in return.)

Charles Hellis = BV3

Assume BLE of second original quality = OQ6

Shootable but needs some repairs and refinishing = CC6

BV3-OQ-CC6 = $984 for 12 bore

So, how many X for 20 bore vs 12 bore?

How much for the 30" barrels?

If you disagree with the OQ or CC, post back your estimate of these two factors. Also, if BLNE, please post back.

Is it possible to send me your valuation system via email?
Thanks in advance.
Would you consider an E C Green BV3?
I am looking at a 10g. Jones Underlever and it appears to be a best gun for Green. Not the best pics though.

Rocketman,

The receiver is a BLNE and that would throw your OQ off slightly. I think the CC is fairly accurate.

Does your evaluation system not have a factor for sub-gauges?

To builder all off the E C Greens that I have looked at, are at least BV2. Best quality hard to find.

It is not that rare to see a gun listed in Cabellas for three or four times it's real value. I hope they did not buy it based on the selling prices. One store had a Remington 1894 B grade with disabled ejectors for 1300 in 10% condition on the racks for two plus years. Another had a Ithaca Western Arms .410 for almost 4 grand. Another great bargain.

At the same time I have bought guns for a fraction of their true value like a Remington Model 12 Gallery Special for less than $200 because it only shot .22 shorts. It was a 90% gun. Or the same model which was on the sale rack because they don't make Remington 22 Special ammo anymore. Same gun would use the Winchester version of the same ammo which can be found. Some of the cape guns are great deals if you figure out the European designation for American cartridges. I missed a nice one because I forgot that minor fact. Instead of a odd European round it was a common round like 22 Hornet or 30-30.
