I was wondering if anyone has some design information on the Colt 1883. Specifically the area of the hinge. Where the action seems to almost rotate around the pin. Very slick. Was this an original Colt design or borrowed from another gun? If needed I can post a picture to clarify what I tried to describe. Thank you, Paul

Don, the pics are not great but as you can see those two pins are set into matching holes in the forend steel. When the gun is closed the center pin or hinge is in alinement with the contour of the action. When the gun is open the leverage rotates the hinge out of contour. There are no screw slots on either side. It is a very smooth action to operate. I'm just curious. Where did this design originate? Michael, yes it is a grade 2. It is also a 2 barrel set. Both 30" with matching forends. It's a wonderful gun, beautiful wood,engraved with dogs and scroll. The workmanship seems first rate. It's difficult to find many articles or records on the 1883. Why is that? Paul

Paul: is there a maker's mark on those brls? A

If there is a in depth article on the 83 I can't remember where it is, I have seen many articles over the years but none I felt the guns deserve. IMO, and remember I'm not a fan of factory made guns, I feel the Colt was one of the best made American doubles. As the prices of custom rifles seems to out run everything else of late I have been thinning my shotguns so I sold my last 83 last year. Someone needs to do the research and publish it, that could be you!
You have a fine looking 83 and I for one, would like to see more.

Drew, there is only the serial # and several stamped 2's.Let me know if you still want any pics. Feel free to email me and let me know what other damascus guns you are looking for. BTW I looked at the picture trail under Colt and you 0have a set of barrels redone by Dale Edmunds courtesy of me. That's a misprint. Must be some one else. Here is one of this gun.
