A painful set of memories to be sure... for her :-)

I went into a LARGE chain LGS and a fellow I knew who worked there said: "Pssst, Gary, I have something to show you, stay right there"

He went into the back and brought out a Beretta long gun box, then pulled out and assembled a beautiful Beretta 687 EELL. He told me the management must have made a mistake on the price (it was rather low) and even though he argued with them that the price was WRONG, they got angry at him and told him to sell it at the price on the sticker. Well, beside having an EXTRA 10% off (one day only) AND getting an EXTRA 15% off if you applied for and opened a credit card with their store name I was thunderstruck and bought it. What shotgunner could refuse such a deal? Not many I'll bet

Well when I got it home did the wifey say, "honey that's such a GR8 deal, congrats" No she went through the roof and didn't talk to me for weeks, which as it happens I quite enjoyed :-)

The next (at the same store, same salesman) time I bought a Beretta (I like Berettas) 391 20ga. youth (despite my son being only 7 or 8) and again got the same treatment from the missus.

The last time I bought a rare NIB 20+ year old handgun as an "Investment" and was once again thrown into the dog house. Well fast forward 5 years from then and a collector of this brand paid me a LOT more than I paid for it (it came with 9 OEM extra mags that themselves were selling for well over a hundred bucks each) and when I got home, I had stuffed wads of 5x100 dollar bills in different pockets I met her in the kitchen and counted out one of the wads after which she said, "What is that for?" I reminded her of the investment handgun and told her it had increased in value and the $500 was to go buy some new dresses. Then I pulled out another $500 wad, counted it out for her and she asked, "what's THAT for?" I said for shoes to match the dress :-) Then pulled yet ANOTHER $500 wad, counted it and said it was to reimburse us for the "investment" I made. When asked if there was any more? I said there was but it was for me to play with :-)

By this time when I brought home a rare MIJ Winchester 101 with screw chokes she just nodded at me, avoided the argument and said to tell her if I sold it. I did not I traded it for a very nice no longer made guitar!

Anyone else?

Great to see your post pop up as I take photos of one beloved Brit BLE that does exist in my wife's eyes next to a new Beretta that does not yet exist...worth noting that this was a pre-wedding purchase, mind you.

I did carry it on a short walkabout she accompanied me on last month and it got a couple extra glances. No words though. We're about to move, so I get the feeling that I'm just looking at a pot of cold water on the stove. Might heat up in a few days.

Thanks for the laugh.

I'm sure I would have been in the dog house, had the wife known about some of my purchases!

One time a friend came over to check out a sxs I had purchased. My wife usually got home from work about an hour later than I. Anyway, he had the shotgun in his hands eyeballing it and I heard the door open. Earlier than expected, my wife walked in and wondered what was up? I told her, my friend brought his new shotgun over to show me and without skipping a beat, he said "well, I'd better be going" and walked out of the house with the shotgun in his hands and left for his home. He brought it in to work the next day and I was able to slip it into the house and put away before my wife came home that evening.

Great story, by the way!

Hey, Gnappi, I want you to be clear on one sentence. Did you "quite enjoy it" mean you enjoyed the gun or the silent treatment?

I hope Cameron truly appreciates his friend. Especially when he didn't keep the gun for himself. After all what could Cameron do, complain about it to his wife?

Years ago I sold a shotgun to an acquaintance and he told me to keep quiet because otherwise there would be a new dress hanging in his wife's closet the next day. It would have been an expensive dress!

Lucky for us, most women can't tell a Purdey from a Daisy Red Rider.

None, since LONG ago I set up a "Gun" fund for myself and a "Fun" fund for her, and insured she was well accounted smile

Only question we are allowed to ask is "Where are you going to put it!!"

Been married to her for 47 years so far

Never has happened. The first CHRISTmas present my wife ever bought me, one month after we were married 46 years ago, was a new gun. That has never been an issue in our marriage.

I'm up to fourteen shotguns, only five or six she knew about. The newest one, a Miruko 28ga....when I showed her the gun, I explained to her that I 'traded' one of my other guns for it. Well it was one of the guns she knew nothing about. I have agreed with her however, buy a gun...sell a gun. Works for me.

After 29 years of marriage we came to that agreement also, we called it the "no net gain of guns" accord which was shortly followed by the divorce agreement some 10 years ago :-)

When I was married, my wife and I arrived at a perfectly reasonable accommodation. Whenever I bought a gun, I needed to buy her some jewelry of roughly equivalent value.

Gun buying got a lot less expensive after my divorce. Good thing, because I've got a lot less money! laugh

I'm happily married but the last two shotguns bought in our house were bought by my wife - for herself.

No, I don't have to sneak guns into the house.

Yes James I do appreciate my friend. He actually mentioned jokingly, the fact that he might just keep it before he turned it over to me.

That was a few years ago and since then, any firearms I've purchased, I usually mention to her what a great deal it was and If I sell it I could make a decent profit on it (of course I rarely sell them). If that doesn't work, I usually use the "hair, purse and shoe card" where she spends more on her hair, purses and shoes over a 6-7 month period of time than what the gun cost.

My wife of 44 years and I have been doing what Skeettx does, with our own separate "do as we wish" funds. Guns have been known to go directly to the back of the safe when brought home with the explanation of being there for some time when they are brought out at a later date. Then there is the explanation that the finely engraved gun is actually cheaper than the blued one because they didn't take the time to polish the scatches out and blue it. Funny how we all get to the same destination.

My secret? The ubiquitous grey gunsock. In fact, if you were to open my safe, you would see a row of grey gunsocks. Every gun comes in and goes out in the same color sock. Honestly I have no secrets, but I am rarely asked. Once over dinner she mentioned a voicemail from our bank about confirming a wire transfer in British Pounds. I acknowledged it was mine and that I would take care of it, and we continued our pleasant meal.

I have been married twice. First time I had joint accounts and watched my first wife spend money like a mad person. Which she was or is, in a way. After ten years and a lot of psychological therapy for her we divorced. I was lucky to find my current wife a few years later. second time around I did things differently.

We have no joint accounts. All property is in my name alone, home, farms, cars, trucks you name it. Her SUV is in her name, I did get to buy it for her and I did get to pick out the color as well. Her income goes directly into her own account and she spends it as she wishes. Mine is the same way. We even had a prenuptial and an amended post-nuptial agreement just to make sure. If I die first she gets 1/3 of everything and the rest goes directly to the kids.

So money is nothing that she complains about. But she did get a bit mad when I bought a house a few years ago. It seemed my first wife could not get a mortgage on smaller house she wanted and since she was still living in a house I owned, I decided to buy the second house for her. I gave her lifetime rights to live in it and put that house in my kids name from the first marriage. Wife number two was not impressed with my largess. Even when I sold the old house and came out ahead she still was not happy with my buying my first wife anything like a house. Took her about six months to get over it and still is not a subject best brought up but that's only been five years or so.

When I pick up something, it's usually with cash. It's such a pain in the tail for me to go and get it that I just ask my wife if she would.

The hair purses and shoes card is a weak hand. Thats more for you. Unless you want your wife rockin a 15 dollar high and tight and an old pair of combat boots when you go out. The purses if not too queer (odd) could work as a game or shell bag. Lookin good aint cheap.

The only purchase that has ever caused big tension was that Honda Shadow Aero I bought. She has always been scared of motorcycles, and I knew she was afraid for me to have one. So, when that opportunity came along I just bought it, and told her about it a couple days later .......... after I had already transferred an equal amount of money into her checking account. That was to appease. Didn't work as well as I had hoped, but not a total bust either. Turns out that she wasn't upset over the bike as much as that I had bought it without telling her I was going to. She couldn't give a care about all my guns, but that bike got her "tore up".

So now, when the bike is back in perfect shape, after my wreck on it, I'm going to sell it and the proceeds will help out on the big 12 ga. hammergun that awaits me in Vegas. That's what I call "conversion of funds".

You gotta stay on your toes, guys. Where there's a will there's a way.

Never a problem with my dear wife and guns, she had her own.
I keep a gun account separate from our household finances.
Occasionally, the gun account has helped partially finance a new car or University tuition, when it was in better shape than our household monies.

The first statement I've highlighted I have not found to be true in life as a rule, and in my own personal experience. They do it for themselves, and other women. They are really quite vain, which leads to the second highlighted quote of looking pretty not being cheap. A woman typically spends an enormous amount of resources (time and money) on how she looks. This ramps up exponentially as time inevitably take its toll: from age defying creams to multiple surgeries.

You would probably want a three day inspection on that used gun bought over the internet, as pics can be inadequate at best, and deceiving at worst. When it comes to that most staggering of all expenditures most men will make, he should be able, even required, to view her without enhancements. Maybe even codified under the section on deceptive trade practices.

My wife owns horses. She has 4 or 5, not really sure of the exact number. Since I pay for everything she really doesn't mind the occasional gun purchase. I'm sure the horse expenses are astronomical. I tell her that I don't want to know.

To her credit, she didn't bat an eye when I told her that I was going to hunt in Africa. Of course I invited her along. But I'm sure the new horse trailer she wants will cost as much as the Africa trip. Oh well.

My deal between my lovely wife and I of 32 years is I buy a shotgun, she gets something that sparkles. Well, she's a little behind on her sparkles. On my last purchase of an RBL. She may freak out on the first of the year, I have an opportunity to pick up another AYA 25bl. Which I don't need, but was one of the original 10 guns we bought back in the 70s. I know the gun have had less than 4 boxs of shells ran throughout it.

Hammergun, trust me if your wife has 4 or 5 horses you are way ahead with your hobby!! Having grown up riding horses/showing horses the horse is the cheapest part of that hobby!! As to which purchase Ive gotten into hot water for? All of them!!😝

In my house it the other way around. My wife wears a new outfit every day. When I ask its always the same, 'I've wore this before', or 'I've had this for a while'. But I never see a package or a bill or any indication she has bought a new outfit. On the other hand, she owns 1/2 doz guns and hunts so she never gives me a problem over my guns.

Women do play the same games as we do. The reason I don't know how many horses my wife actually owns is because the status of the horses is always a little vague and changing. She even says one horse is mine but I've never ridden it although I do ride occasionally. I try not to get too worked up about it as long as I can afford my hobbies.

Hahahaha, this reminds me of when I was married. "This old thing....I've had it for ages" Took me a while to clue in......bought last year, in a bag in her walk-in for the last year an a half, waiting for the right time. Oh well, she always looked good.

Oh well, she always looked good.

Thats my point. Does it matter who she does it for? As long as I get to look and touch and smell.

My wife has more money than me so this never comes up.

I hear ya. Had my new Rizzini on my lap for about two weeks after she arrived. Constantly got the head shake. Woman just don't understand the beauty of a gun....well most woman anyway.

A couple of anecdotes.
My Wife never complains -------until a couple of years ago I had the chance of buying a Krieghoff that I really didn't need but was too good a deal to pass on .
So rather than carry a lerge wad of cash with me I paid by cheque. A few weeks later I was rushing around like a mad thing with the good lady paying bills and other such stuff before going to the ground to do a few lessons.
Rapidly running out of time (we all know how ladies like to browse in shops )I dropped the Wife off at home and whilst doing so said " Be a sweetheart and just put my cheque bokk in my drawer to save me getting out of the car".
On the way to the ground I got six missed calls from the Wife. When I called her back she said " You and me need to talk when you're home".

When I was a Gunsmith in the Army a Major asked me if I could call round to his house to give an estimate to repair 'a bargain gun'. I did , when I mentioned the cost of new wood , making a stock and forend , blacking the barrels etc.
A voice came from the next room " Oh darling that's an awful lot of dresses".
"It's okay" he said to me ," we have an understanding."

Ok it's not a gun, (I'm pretty good getting those in the back door) but what do you do when you have put a sizable deposit down an a started setter (got a couple of months before pickup) and need to get it into the house.. Now we have three dogs, one lap dog (wife's) one washout setter who loves everyone and my hunting dog Magic. Problem being he is 12 (and the other two are 12 and 13)and I found this really nice dog, ranges what I want loves being in the house riding in the truck etc. So how do I play this hand............? I'll even take the smart ass answers under consideration.......

Eis, Just be straight with her.

I explained to mine years ago, how much my sporting life means to me. I explained that gaps in my dog ownership meant seasons of dissatisfaction. Years I would never get back.
Dogs don't live as long as people, and there would always be periods of overlap, when one dog was old and retired, and one was young and rambunctious. So far, barring my failed litter 2 years ago, it's been a good run. I'm sans Lab right now, and will fix that as soon as I can, for next season. With her understanding.

Dogs fill a place in our lives, and she knows I can't be happy without them.

Well, I guess we all know what the first wife said about that gun.

Eis,
I have a plan. Explain to her that I can help out with the kenneling. I enjoyed hunting behind Magic, can't wait to meet the new one.

Eis,
Dogs are easy to get into the house, " Just had a text about a dog that is going to be put down if it isn't rehomed " (by today, tonight, next week , next month . Choose to suit!)
Guns ? Now there is another issue !
" Just had this gun given to me or It was a bargain or Only paid a bargain price for it or I thought it may suit you or the Grandchild etc."
Only issue with that is you buggers get my guns for a song when I pass over. But hey ENJOY.

It's like this.

I started as a trap shooter. That's what my 'mentor' did, so trap was the thing for about 4 years. My horizons eventually expanded but I'm still a trap shooter. While I've mostly lost the registered trap shooter mentality I still bear the scars.

My first 'real' trap gun was more than I could afford at the time. I borrowed money with the rather lame story that 'this would be the last gun I ever had to buy'.

Of course, I never hear about that do I?

I stumbled upon this general conversation 2 decades ago.
It's a generational one. And contentious, prone to unpleasant exchanges and judgemental slights.
Old couples conjoin resources, young one's not so much. And then there's the household where one or the other stays at home.

The level of interchange is tied to how you run your household. Everyone must do what works for them. It's never an outsider's business.

I've seen this plan back-fire when a guys dies very young, and these hidden assets get scarfed up by vultures he thought were his friends instead of going to the guy's widow or children.

Just as bad is when the guy didn't hide the asset, but instead lied about the price or value, and the heirs then sell it for far less than fair market value.

I think Jagermeister has found a pretty good solution to this problem. He just buys guns on Layaway or puts them on hold, tells us all about his new purchase, and then backs out of the deal without ever taking possession of the gun. This approach can save on shipping and FFL Transfer fees too!

Knew a fellow who use to take a broom handle in a soft case out his door to every gun show. If he bought something he'd leave the broom handle in his truck and bring the gun in the case and tell his wife he had no buyers and was going to put his "old" gun back in the rack. Did this for years I'm told until his wife sent him a text one day while he was at the gun show. "Please pick up a broom handle today and that case better be empty tonight. ". The jig was up. You can't fool them every time and best not try.

They know your purchases are a diversion of resources they view as their's to direct.
They can't wait for you to die to get even by cashing them all in as fast as they possibly can.

Seen it many times.

Trunkful's paraded around to gun clubs on the Saturdays after the funeral.
