Not all Merks have cheek panels (pieces?) of course. I'm not talking about a cheekpiece. I'm talking about the sharply pointed cheeks behind the action on each side, of course. And, on the Merkel they are sharply pointed. SRH

Those scalloped boxlocks are more costly to make and design is harder on wood under recoil. There are plenty of guns out there in same price point as 147e with BSA-ish E.J. Churchill being just one example. That one is more costly because of name Churchill on side of the action.

I think the scalloped action on the present Merkel would be easier on the stock wood than the earlier pointed shape found on the older GDR guns, which were similar to the scalloped SKBs that often had cracks behind the action.

And, on the Merkel they are sharply pointed. SRH yes, that is why I put the parenthetical with a question mark. The panels being the action are pointed to the rear. That's just aesthetics to me. If it bothered me, I'd round them off, but. Karl, the scallops behind my Merkel have small cracks. My two SKBs do not. Both are bedded but the Merkel has been used much more and much harder, so that may explain it. Still mystified why Merkels have such a reputation for strength/stoutness.

Webley & Scott, Wrights, AA Brown,, yes....BSA, Midland, no.

Karl SKBs stock cracks are usually traced back to the thru-bolt not being snugged up properly.

Thanks for the comments and info on the 147's. I have been studying several for sale and I agree that the newer more rounded frames and easier on the wood than the earlier GDR vintage guns that came more to sharper points. I prefer single trigger guns but I have never cared for looks of the Merkel single trigger, so I think I could live with double triggers.

Brent, what I meant about the cheek panels on Merkels is that they are much more defined, with sharper definition, that any other make of double I have ever seen. I have small hands, and when I gripped the gun, it felt strange and a little uncomfortable. I don't mean that to be a damning indictment of Merkel. I am of the opinion that they're very well made guns ........... just not aesthetically pleasing to me. We all have different likes and dislikes. Glad you like them.
Truth is, I've never found anything about a German made double I didn't like except for aesthetics, and cheekpieces.
