I'm somewhat of a newcomer to 20 bores. I was going to hunt pheasants today with it, but the places I wanted to go were nontox only. Fine, but I don't have any for the 20. I have some Bi #6 so that was the choice this time.

The Ithaca's chokes are M/F so I'm not really wanting to shoot steel in it. What does anyone recommend for pheasants with a 20 and nontox? 2 3/4 or 3" doesn't matter. Be helpful if it is something common, or a source to order if it is not. This is central Iowa and anything that's not plain jane ammo or some sort of whiz-bang ultra hot zombie ammo is pretty hard to come by.

Probably your most economical choice. Everything else out there seems to be pretty hot.

Stan, are those safe in a full choke double? Admittedly, it's not an old gun Ithaca/SKB M100, but I worry about squeezing too much hard stuff through that left barrel.

I would go with the Kent's bismuth or even tungsten over heavy shot. They pattern and punch much better.

No, my bad, Brent. I overlooked the chokes you mentioned. I wouldn't use it in the F barrel, either.

Sorry.

The Kent Bismuth is available at prices I paid for these shells 15 to 20 years ago. It's not low pressure or low recoil shell, but it was designed to be used successfully in all types of shotguns including venerated Belgian Auto-5 which had fixed choke barrels. That was good move on part of manufacturer because they can sell more shells.

I have 5 boxes of the Kent Bi on the way. Not cheap, but it will last a long time for late season hunting.

Thanks.

Not for older guns with tight chokes, but I shot the pheasant opener with the new Black Cloud in 20 ga with 1oz of #3, IC choke. Very impressed with its ability to knock down every bird I hit, but left a lot of runners. Buddy was shooting 12 ga Bismuth #5, same result, lots of runners. The requirement to shoot nontox for upland game seems to have significantly increased the number of cripples, just like the early steel on ducks. Other observations?
