I have a circa 1901 J P Sauer & Son / V L & D Knock-About SLNE. This is 7 !/2 lb gun with 30" tight choked barrels. It does have 70 stamped into the extractor face. The stock at the comb was hollowed out with a leather covered cork insert installed. With this comb insert I tend to think it may have been intended for the traps, otherwise would have presumed a waterfowl gun.

I know there will be disagreement, but the careful rechambering of these guns is not usually as catastrophic as some people seem to think it is.

So is the consensus that this has been re-chambered? I asked the seller if it had extractor marking and he said no.

Its a shame as its such an incredible German gun.

Rechambering is subjective. I would not rechamber

The decision first is based on whether the shorter shell is a big deal for you or not, then it is a question of barrel wall thickness around the chamber and forcing cone, (you need to be able to properly measure), then if thick enough, consider if the value is affected by the change,

After all is said and done it is not a big deal except for high end collector grade guns.

That said I have gotten used to short chambers and both reload for them and purchase factory ammo for them and do not find short chambers a bother.

30 years ago, I would rechamber, but not anymore

Depending on the seller he may give you a break on price for short chambers, but you never know

It's a shame you think it's such a shame.

The gun weighs 6 3/4 lbs. The barrel profile does not look like there's a huge amount of taper in front of the chambers.

From the photos, it certainly looks stout. It's from Germany. They overbuild everything.

If it appealed to me I'd buy it on the condition that it passed my own personal barrel wall thickness test whatever that might be with a 3 day return agreement.

This assumes you are interested in owning and shooting it.

One noteworthy item on this double is that it is fitted w/ Witten Excelsior tubes made by one of the best of the best tube mechanics, Johann Werner Gottgetreu of Suhl. He was born circa 1840/1841 and expired near the end of WWI in 1919. Regarding The Daly Gun, I believe he was the main source for Witten Excelsior tubes and for the moment I'm not sure just how he had that niche market.

Cheers,
