Minnesota Joe, let me ask and propose this. If the gun is to be used and enjoyed, and you aren't worried about the next owner's needs and wants, have a good wood man like Dennis Smith (aka the Stock Doctor) do a nice wood extension and pad. I've seen any number of guns, but especially so English guns, with wood butt extensions that were not unpleasing at all for a shooting piece. Just consider it part of this gun's uniqueness and character. I would.

Or get a 1 1/2" pad from Tony. I've used two or three of them.

Nothing personal Paul, but I would much prefer a nice wood extension to one of those grotesque 1 1/2" pads.

The 1 1/2" pad is the ugliest thing I can imagine on the butt of a shotgun.

I think a 1 1/2" pad looks like crap on the butt of a shotgun too, really, just about any pad over 1" looks like hell. And a wood extension (or horn) over 1/2" looks just as bad. I'm not sure why, but they look like crap.

Everyone worries about "value". How much "value" does a gun have with a stock that has been shortened two inches and has a rotten recoil pad?

I would add a wooden spacer without any hesitation and do my best to blend it to match the original. If it isn't invisible, so what? It beats the heck out of a bunch of spacers and actually restores some "value".

If balance is an issue, a wooden extension gives you a lot of opportunity to adjust the balance.

I have a Ferlib with a very well matched 1-3/4 inch wood extension. Whoever did the work cut three parallel lines about the depth of checkering at the seam. The result was to fool the eye enough that most people who handle the gun dont notice the extension. If you would be interested in seeing the result, Ill take a photo and send it to you if youll PM me your email address.
