You guys have shamed me so much that I'm going to go ahead and give her the Gertest Berthon 16 gauge with the 1906 Didier Drevet barrels (mentioned in the "dating early 20th Century Shotguns"). The chambers are original 7 cm so it will take 2 3/4 shells (I'll give her some boxes of RST 2 1/2, 7/8 ounce to start with and make sure she shoots low-pressure 2 3/4's afterwards). My wife's Family is from Saint Chamond near Saint Etienne; My son is dual American-French citizen; my Dau-in-law's grandmother was French on her Father's side...so it's appropriate. The LOP is a bit short for me but near perfect for her. She will love it and take care of it.

Just to let you all know - when I contacted the seller on Gun Broker a few months ago, it turned out to be our own Ed Goode...and I must say the gun was everything he said it was and more - I couldn't be happier with it. The triggers break like glass - it feels like an old Swiss clock and locks up with a satisfying "click;" it is just is so precise and the engraving is tasteful and restrained. Ed's trolling can be irritating - but this gun was a great buy for me.

As for son's 870, he does a lot of work in the wilds of the Alaska panhandle and in salt-water ocean kayaks and needed something for bears. You'll recall I was going to get him a coach gun but the nickel plated, synthetic stock 870 Marine Magnum won out. He has an extra 28" barrel + several chokes for it and the ability to change out the long mag as well for hunting. It doesn't rust. "One gun to rule them all and in the wilderness find them."
