Come on dad, stick to the original plan and give her the 16. Maybe, you could think of the $750 you save on the Huglu as a good start on the next Saint Etienne you get to be on the look out for. Besides, the game dinners and memory pictures will be way more meaningful. She sounds like a million bucks, I'm sure she'd let you borrow it now and then. That's what I was thinking too, Gene. Give her the St Etienne gun. Yes, steel is a bit of a problem as are magnum loads but we all know how to deal with it and find it worthwhile. Let her into the club!

On a site populated primarily by people who enthusiastically collect and shoot older SxS of all values, we are "gun snobs" for advocating an older SxS? LD, That statement is idiotic.

The last 2 weeks I've hunted a couple days alongside a guy carrying a 20 ga Ringneck. He's been getting one-shot kills on pheasants over his setter.
You could go far worse than the Ringneck.
I will also put in a pitch for the Dickinson, but in 28. Cabelas has the 28 ga with 30 inch barrels and it is a beautifully smooth-swinging gun. One of the guys who works in the back room there and is an excellent shot and instructor bought one for himself. He told me it was probably the best-handling gun in the store. Having pawed over most of their merchandise, I have to agree.

Huglu will work well,Gun snobs aside... Nobody mentioned the lads 870. Everyone knows a gentleman carries an Ithaca 37. ____________________________ Imprinted is what happens when you get smart with the wrong fellow in the neighborhood I grew up in... as in... how ‘bout I imprint my knuckles on your fookin’ face!

King. you're talking about a William Evans. Now if she first used a Nitro Special or a Stevens 311 or something I can see your point, but it wasn't.

You guys have shamed me so much that I'm going to go ahead and give her the Gertest Berthon 16 gauge with the 1906 Didier Drevet barrels (mentioned in the "dating early 20th Century Shotguns"). The chambers are original 7 cm so it will take 2 3/4 shells (I'll give her some boxes of RST 2 1/2, 7/8 ounce to start with and make sure she shoots low-pressure 2 3/4's afterwards). My wife's Family is from Saint Chamond near Saint Etienne; My son is dual American-French citizen; my Dau-in-law's grandmother was French on her Father's side...so it's appropriate. The LOP is a bit short for me but near perfect for her. She will love it and take care of it. Just to let you all know - when I contacted the seller on Gun Broker a few months ago, it turned out to be our own Ed Goode...and I must say the gun was everything he said it was and more - I couldn't be happier with it. The triggers break like glass - it feels like an old Swiss clock and locks up with a satisfying "click;" it is just is so precise and the engraving is tasteful and restrained. Ed's trolling can be irritating - but this gun was a great buy for me. As for son's 870, he does a lot of work in the wilds of the Alaska panhandle and in salt-water ocean kayaks and needed something for bears. You'll recall I was going to get him a coach gun but the nickel plated, synthetic stock 870 Marine Magnum won out. He has an extra 28" barrel + several chokes for it and the ability to change out the long mag as well for hunting. It doesn't rust. "One gun to rule them all and in the wilderness find them." Whew, just imagine, sitting through a nice pheasant dinner, smiling and enjoying the evening. Someone says I can taste the gaminess, but it's alright. Meanwhile you're thinking, tastes like huglu to me. Naw, this could end up being a gun that stays in the family, and you're fortunate to be around to share your enthusiasm for it.
