I am looking at a project gun in Holts sealed bid auction. I know it needs to be sleeved and most likely put back on face. Any recommendations for a gunsmith in GB to do this for me. It is an antique so shipping to the US should be easy once the gun is sleeved and reproofed. I did this many years ago but that fellow has passed on to the workbench on the other side.

Stallones, thanks for that info. I am sure more than a few people could use that info.

He does great work. I have seen several projects that he finished for a friend of mine and they were WELL done.

I had a Greener G60, top safety, that had I known, I might have used Mr. Fawcett.
Instead I consigned the gun to a UK auction house.

Toby Barclay will get it done for you. He did it for a friend of mine who you probably know. It came out well and was reasonable I recall. He might still be in Maryland and can take it back with him.
So many guns, so little time!

I'm guessing $3000 total for Mr. Fawcett's work. Just a guess, mind you. JR

Had a chance to talk to John Fawcett who told me he was happily retired and not doing any gun work. His son who now runs the business has quite enough work with repairs for his customers and is not taking on any outside work in the foreseeable future. The sleeving specialists are becoming very thin on the ground in the UK. My go-to sleever retired through ill-health some years back and the remaining business is struggling to keep abreast of the trade work they have. Another person I know of is still taking on sleeving work but by necessity it takes a low priority and one has to be very patient. The only others are the true, time served barrel-makers like Blacker. Obviously the work is of the highest order but about twice the price of the more normal gun works. They also take their time and patience is a real necessity!!

Elderkin or Midland gun services may be worth a call or email. I've seen a pair of old Damascus barrels invisibly sleeved and blacked by one or the other (can't remember which one though sorry) The job was spot on, rib engraving was picked out very well too.
Rust never sleeps !

Thanks for the suggestions. The two guns I was bidding on both went for more than my bid. One for a single pound and the other for two pounds extra. Don't know if I should be glad or sad. I have been a brides made so often lately that I have rice in my hair. If I bid 205 someone bids 207 on a sealed bid, if I bid 2600 on a normal auction it goes for 3500 after an estimate of 1800-2000. Oh well half the fun is in the trying, then the work begins.

Sorry, barrel browner, slipped my mind - too many malts before switching on PC! This work will be exemplary.

Hi Toby No worries we are still in the process of getting everything in place to run smoothly just about there now.

Toby managed a project on sleeving and return to service of a Woodward BLE for me a couple of years ago. The price was right and the work was quite and entirely satisfactory. I highly recommend Toby for project management!!
BTW, Toby, I'm shooting said gun well and like it more each time I shoot it.

Toby, are you still in the USA at this time? If not, when will you be back? I have two potential sleeving jobs.
