I was driving by a Cabela's today, so I stopped in. They informed me they would happily accept a C&R license but the Damascus Lefever was not C&R eligible.

Cabela's like some sellers including dealers on some auction sites do not know the rules in a C&R license, it states any gun over 50 years old is C&R eligible.

I have had a C&R license for almost 10 years. I registered for one because my main interest then was L.C. Smith's. At the time they even listed the Marlin era L.C. Smith's from the L.C. Smith Gun Company that were produced until 1968-1971 as C&R eligible even though they were not 50 years old then. They listed the serial number range in their booklet to make it clear.

Was it pre-1898? If so, Cabelas would be technically correct. No C&R or FFL needed.
Otherwise Lefevers are pretty easy. They are listed by name in the C&R book. All Lefevers (including Nitros) are eligible. Its when you get to the small obscure manufacturer that is not listed in the C&R book that it gets interesting.

Most mass retailers' (and shippers') sales staff members have NO CLUE as to the pertinent laws and policies regarding their products--the firms assume that their corporate legal staff can clean up any mistakes made and that's just a "cost of doing business."

Most of the considerable sales lost by product and regulatory ignorance just aren't ever known to even middle management--why would a salesperson report such an incident, even if he or she were aware of it? And fine or "interesting" guns aren't a big part of corporate profits anyway.

All I can say is that in gun buying in such establishments, you have to do some "pre-season scouting"--after all, you're huntin' aren't you? Just not for fur or feathers or scales....

Go and talk to the sales staff and find "the guy" (who might just be a gal....) who knows the general kinds of guns you're interested in, and the mechanics of selling them to you, or is at least interested in doing it right.

For most of us that means starting with looking for gray hair and glasses!

It just made me laugh. No real functional difference to me. I left with two nice pieces. It's been too long since I found anything.
