I'm really surprised to hear that, Ted. I guess I kinda tho't that bullfrogs were mostly Southern critters.
Bullets from a .22 don't ricochet when they're directed from a slightly "higher than frog" position, into a soft mud bank. Sounds like you were shooting from the bank towards the water .......... we shoot from a boat towards the bank.

A few years ago, when I got back into .22 shooting was when I discovered that iron sights don't work like they used to. Poor modern workmanship I guess...Geo

Do they ever charge when they're wounded?
This would require a suitable double rifle.
With two triggers.
And perhaps a backup man.

Scopes work much better at night than irons ............ trust me, regardless how good or bad your eyes are.
Frogs don't charge, but, you do encounter gators, moccasins and rattlers when after frogs at night. Yes, I once actually shined a big rattler floating in a pond in a coil ........... like it was just enjoying itself a cooling float.

I did virtually all my frog hunting in "Wading" water, didn't have a boat. I either gigged them or caught them by hand. Kept the light in my left hand & had my right hand beside it. Just move the hand & the light in together & pick them up, no problem.
Seems to me at the normal range you would be shooting a frog the height of the scope above the bore would cause you to under shoot a bit, did you have to compensate for this by holding over.

SRH We didn't have bullfrogs, Stan. I worked in the summer at a resort on the Whitefish chain, near Hayward, WI. They were leopard frogs, run much smaller than bullfrogs, but, excepting that you have to have a few more to make a meal, I'd bet they are just as good. We stalked on a narrow sand beach for them, right at twilight. Nobody told me when I was ten that I needed a scope, so, I didn't have one. My Dad was nervous when kids with rifles were around water. I should have paid more attenton to why, but, I was a kid, and just respected his wishes. In addition to bait duty, I cleaned cabins, mowed grass, collected and burned garbage at the dump, cleaned fish (cleaned a lot of fish, actually) and hung around with the pretty girls who had folks that rented cabins at the resort. We had nice bonfires several nights a week. I also tended bar when the owners drove to the Dairy Queen on a friday night. The bar never had more than two or three guys having a beer, so, a kid could handle it, even if it wasn't exactly legal. It really didn't seem like work, at the time. I did it for years. Best, Ted

Too many cottonmouths out at night in frog territory for us to grab them by hand, Miller. Or, maybe I's just chicken. Yes, we held over. "Queen" Jean was really good at it. SRH

Stan, I had a glow in the dark front sight like my old LLBean watch face and a reap peep sight. Worked well at the time. Back then we used what we had and never thought we were handicapped. These days I'd have to have multiple guns to do the same job. Well mostly to overcome not having ten year old eyes. Youth is so wasted on the young,
