Ted:

As you know, I'm a user, not a collector. All my stuff needs to be useful and practical first and everything else second. The 241s I'm seeing for sale are pretty dear, the 552s not so much and...I do love a good deal. I'm also near the end with iron sights, just reality, I fear. So.....Im probably going to look into a 552.

I doubt you will regret it. If you do, sell it to me.

Kidding aside, the 552 receiver is grooved for tip off mounts. Perfectly suited for the use at hand, but, I do put a spot of blue locktite on them when mounting everything up.

Good luck, Lloyd.

Best,
Ted

I shot a pile of squirrels over the years. For a long time I used a bolt action Mossberg which I had foolishly taken in on a trade & then found the only way to get a return on my investment was to Shoot it out, no resale value at all. Even in my youth when I had good eyesight could never shoot open sights well, could do better with a peep.
On this gun I ended up mounting a 3x7 variable Bushnell 7/8" tube .22 scope. Kept it set at 5 power & never changed it. This rifle was a tack driver with LR ammo but shot about a Ľ choke pattern (50% in a 30" circle) with shorts. Thus my ammo pick for it over all the years I used it was Standard Velocity LR's. Only bushy tails I can recall lodging hit in a fork while falling on the way down. In that situation it would not really have mattered if they had been Killed with a Daisy Red rider or a .600 Jeffrey Nitro. They didn't hang on the limb they were shot on.
I never used High Velocity loads because of the Sonic Crack, most efficient method I ever found for clearing a tree where a group of squirrels were working. Give him a head shot with that Std Vel LR & let him lay where he falls, within about 2 mins the rest will be back to cutting. A high vel would normally clear the tree with the first shot.
Just my personal experience with the squirrel.

Grey squirrel is my absolute most favorite game to eat, bar none. Quail and Grouse are delicious but I think squirrel is even better. A short story re eating squirrel: I have an Arab acquaintance who is a rug dealer and he brought some Oriental rugs to my home to look at and possibly to buy one evening. Prior to him coming I told him we would grill out some steaks. Well, I hunted that morning and with good fortune had this mess of greys instead. My Arab friend was very shocked and reluctant to dine on squirrel and was very disappointed that I changed my mind on the black angus New York strips. Well, I fried and simmered these squirrels in a very old and well seasoned iron skillet. Made some squirrel gravy, biscuits and some mashed potatoes along with some juicy, August Indiana summer tomatoes......to make a long story shorter, my Arab friend went back for THIRDS! :-). Those squirrels were delicious, and probably the best batch I've ever made. Yum, I'm looking forward to squirrel season in August.

Since we've drifted off the original topic, how many of you have hunted bullfrogs with a .22 at night? I grew up going with men who gigged them, but I always found that way of collecting them distasteful.

We would go with a partner. One was the paddler and handled the light, the other was the designated shooter. They sit just out of the water, on the bank, and facing the water. That white throat area is very visible when the light is on them, and you can hold the crosshairs on them, squeeze off a round, and the frog just flops backwards on the bank motionless.

My wife loved to go with me back then and got to be a deadly shot with that Apache Black and a little 4 power scope. She once took 13 frogs with 14 rounds. Not bad for sitting in a boat shooting.

Not much better eating than fried bullfrog legs.

buzz, have you ever made a squirrel purlow?

Have I ever! The slow rivers down here are full of frogs. A pump .22 with short hollow points and a gig to pick up with instead of having to get out of the boat on a steep bank. A long rifle hp will flip a frog six feet up the bank, but the shorts are just right.

I asked our local game warden once whether shooting frogs instead of gigging them was OK. He was stumped...Geo

Went "hunting" frogs with a fly rod and flashlight one night very long ago on the Allgheny River with my dad. The light on the bug made it irresistible to the frogs.

I hunted frogs with 22 shorts HV in a S&W K 22 Masterpiece, while walking the bank of the pond at my cousin's. I found the shorts killed them, but didn't knock them into the pond. We had the legs for breakfast at the camp. Pretty high class eating for teenage boys.

Remington model 12 with peep sight is deadly for frogs using shorts. We use to go around a pond and shoot them as easy as shooting tin cans. A crab net or a jig to recover them. Kept them in a burlap bag in the canoe or boat. Good eating and a fun way to spend a night.

I hunted frogs with a BB gun. It is a Daisy with a rifled barrel that handles BBs and .177 pellets. I still have it.
I prefered squirrel and crayfish to frog legs. I never thought to use a .22 rifle to hunt frogs, and I bet my Dad would have nixed it, with concerns of ricochet, we weren't typically allowed to shoot rifles around water, as I think that was what he was worried with.
That was a long time ago. Used to sneak up on the frogs on the beach, and put a BB just behind the head, and centered in the back. I worked at a resort, and collected bait, and shot frogs to sell, $1.50 for eight frogs, or 16 legs, if I am remembering right. They never even flinched. Some people bought them for bait, some people fried the legs.
Was either three or four pumps of the handle. The gun would take ten, but, a BB got weird with that much power on it. Pellets worked well at higher velocitys, but, were more money than BBs, so, us kids never had them.
I got two pennies each for night crawlers, one penny for red worms, 2 pennies for crickets, and a nickle for crayfish. I spent the most time digging worms, and made the most money on crickets and crayfish.

I had a ton of fun as a kid, now that I stop to think about it.

Best,
Ted
