I got a notice from Photobucket that my account has been disabled because the images I have embedded here are third party hosting.

Anyone else get disabled?

Did some research

Our Terms of Use does not allow 3rd party hosting for free accounts. We ask that you upgrade to our Plus 500 subscription plan to continue using Photobucket to power your blog, business, or hobby.

Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website.

For example, using the <img> tag to embed or display a JPEG image from your Photobucket account on another website such as a forum, Etsy, eBay auction listings, blog, etc. is definitively 3rd party hosting.

To upgrade your account or view our competitive subscription plans,

AND FOLKS that is $400 per YEAR to host these pictures on Photobucket, WHEW

Other people have been complaining about this problem in other threads. It seems that any picture that were hosted by Photobucket will no longer appear here unless you pay the substantial annual fee.

This seems to include old images that were in past threads in the archives. Most of that content will be gone because few people will be willing to pay the fees just to share a few photos of their guns.

This has happened to other photo hosting sites as well in the past. There is a 5 year grace period where everything is free then the hammer comes down. It's a shame and a scam. A lot of historical research is gone.

Is there a way to post photos directly to this forum?

I've been using jpegbox with good results. I don't believe it's possible do enter pictures easily from your computer.

What really pisses me off about this is that all of Petrov's photos are gone too. Historically this is tragic and I don't know who has access to his account any more.

I can post a picture in 2 minutes or less with jpgbox. It goes down once a year or so but somehow it comes back strong.

Mike,
I don't think your account has been deleted but rather parts of the account have been disabled.

Although I don't post much, to redo the numerous images I have posted using another site would be a major undertaking. Fortunately I have maintained an image library locally.

I have resisted using iCloud but Apple will survive and will not use such underhanded tactics like Photobucket. I am looking into embedding iCloud images into posts on this blog.

NO I deleted all my photo and then I cancelled my account.

I do not need to look at the photos there as I have the ones I want
on an external hard drive.

What I wanted was a photo hosting site

And I have used Hunt101 for years with Photobucket as an alternative.

Mike

p.s. Stan, yes BUT soon you will be told you are in violation of the new policy and have to enroll in the Plus 500 plan.

No big deal if they do. Easy come, easy go. It won't be half as bad as WWII.

I'm not going to get too upset over losing a privilege I paid nothing to get to start with, and used absolutely free for many years.

The online hosting may be over for free accounts, but it may be possible to download from PB to your computer and upload to another service if not already on your computer. Gil

When I put photos onto my computer they go into a distinct "PHOTOS" category, for lack of a better and proper term. From there they go to PB when I decide to move them there. If I lose all 303 pics in my PB account, I still have them on the computer, and can open an account with another hosting site and put them in there as I need them.

One thing I don't understand about all of this ....... if photobucket is a hosting account, the purpose of which is to be able to post your pics on a 3rd forum, why are they getting so uptight about us doing what it was intended for? Was PB not intended for that purpose to begin with?

No matter, it won't cost me any sleep tonight.

Just for ya'lls information, another member here referred me to imgur.com years ago.

Nary a hitch anywhere. Take care

To me the whole set up looked shaky from the beginning.
Now I definitely don't like that so much information on forums such as this one has been gutted to near useless.
It would be good if they supported the existing posted photo's & only charged from here on in. But then still when a person died & did not pay it all disappears anyway. Shaky as I said.
Will it only be a matter of time before the other photo hosting sites do the same.

I see your point. How can we get those back now?

I was just on there and I'm having all sorts of problems with that site. Still have my pictures but it jams up constantly now.

This.

But use it only for sharing. Storing should be done on your own external hard-drive which you can plug right into your next computer when your current one dies (every 3-4 years?).

You can't use these free sites as your storage space, because they all eventually stop wanting to give their product away for free. I would personally rather get what I pay [modestly] for what I get from the beginning, but the "new" way of doing things (at least on the internet) seems to be giving stuff away for free ("setting the hook"), and then attempting to charge later ("reeling them in"). But it hasn't proven to work too well.

Lots of good threads are going to be stripped of photos. From $0 to $400. Can't see that lasting...

Hi all, great info, I've used PB also with very good results, but seems like the gravy train is gone. I did register with jpgbox, very easy BTW.

I was wondering if one can transfer their pictures on PB to jpgbox? And if so, how?

Thanks for the heads up!

Greg

Greg, I believe you will always be able (so far) to download from PB to your computer and then upload to a new account. I got the $10 upgrade from free to no ads earlier this year on PB, so my photos still appear. When that contract runs out, Katie bar the door. What's to stop jpbox to eventually doing the same as PB at a later date? Google has cloud storage on photos, but then that puts one subject to ransom as well. Gil

George and others that find that photobucket.com is still working for you. Yesterday it still worked for me, too; but today's a different story as it's no longer allowing me to copy and paste my images--your day may be coming soon, too.

I just registered on jpgbox.com and this is a test of posting my first image through them:

Heck, worked fine with jpgbox. In fact easier to use than PB. I'm sold on this one!

* Log into jpgbox.com
* Click on "My Account"
* Click on "My uploaded images", then choose your pic.
* Click on the url in the box that says for "For Forums", the url of your pic will hi-lite in blue.
* Then come back here and right click in the body of the post where you want to insert it. Then click on paste, you will see that url appear. Click on preview and the pic you inserted will be shown, if everything looks copacetic, click on submit.

Notes: It appears that jpgbox's default size is 600 x 400 pixels, you can enlarge that to 800 x 600 and your pic will show up here a little larger (compare gjw's to Keith's and my post above to see the difference in image sizes). If you want to post more than one pic in a post it's easiest if you have two windows open and then toggle between the two.

Storage has gotten so cheap some BBS forums are now self hosting photos so they are around forever.

I agree it's a shame, but .......... a scam? Hardly. We use something for free, they never promise forever, they never promise security, then we get mad when they change policies? Do we somehow DESERVE freebies?

Kinda sounds like those who get on the welfare dole, getting something they never earned or paid for, then get jacked put of shape when it is denied them.

You get what you pay for ............ and in this case you paid nothing. Anyone who placed their faith in PB to safeguard valuable photos should have known better in the first place.
