To the first few posters. I only wish the majority out there felt the same as you do! When was the last time you saw a high conditioned 42 with a solid rib for under 1500?

I have two very nice 17s that I have less in than either of these guns being sold. It's a shame money has to ruin everything!

Not being all that familiar with this model and recognizing what I'm about to ask is subjective; Here goes. How do these Remington Model 17s stack up in comparison to a Winchester Model 12?

I'm not huffy Greg,I'm serious! I remember when Philly Fox 12s were 400 dollar guns and 16s were everywhere for 700 bucks. I also remember buying Miroku SxS 20s for under $500 and German small bores for the same.

Who ever thought that field grade would become fashionable and that upgrading would become so common. I know one guy who sold 14 model 42 Winchesters to a 70 yr old guy who felt they were better than money in the bank. He didn't have to give him a volume discount either.

And, I did realize your tongue was most likely firmly planted in your cheek.

It's not hard for me to imagine those prices when you walk into any sporting goods store and the new guns all seem to lack even one ounce of character. Lifeless wood, too-perfect checkering, and safety instructions stamped into every surface.

To the uninitiated, the model 17 was the predessor of the Ithaca 37. It came in 20 gauge only, and was more petite in the receiver than a later 20 gauge Ithaca model 37. It never sold in the numbers that the model 12 did, and has a simpler takedown (only the barrel itself is removed, and it can be done with one hand) and bottom ejection, and load. The benefits of bottom ejection and load are mostly theoretical, except in a duck blind, or, if you are left-handed. I've owned all three, and have sold copies of the model 12 and 37 (a couple just recently) but NEVER a copy of a model 17. I never would sell a decent 17, either.
They are simply, that good.
Best,
Ted
