My family and I made the pilgrimage to DC again this spring to do all the tourist things we had missed the last time we were there. There's a new sheriff in town, of course, which did tend to add to the sense of having a real adventure. I hated the crowds (as usual) but there were still a few fun things to see and do:

The Air & Space Museum (in Chantilly, near Dulles Airport, not the National Mall version) had these items on display. Made me very happy to see them again.

& Lindbergh's Model 54

Most of the other displays on the Mall are nauseatingly PC, like the "Newseaum" where I spent most of my time explaining to my 13-year old why I largely disagreed with the message being conveyed. But this place was still pretty nice:

Getting in was a chore, but it was still worth it.

If you missed the NRA museum, put it down for a must see next time.

+1 on the NRA museum. Excellent collection of rare high grade doubles.

I know, please forgive me. But...after wandering the National Mall for days and getting a belly-full of new-age political correctness from almost every edifice there, I almost breathed a sigh of relief when I saw General Arnold's M12 still being displayed. DC seems to me to be a culture war on steroids now (maybe I'm just being overly sensitive?) and it does feel like the forces for the more-traditional values that I mainly embrace are in serious retreat there. I'm sure that part of that is a common old-guy lament but... not all of it.

I'm not xenophobic or anything like that, but this is another one of my favorite displays there....

FiFi (the Condederate Air Force's B-29) does make it up here every once in a while, and while she is neat to see flying around, this bird is very impressive when you're up-close and personal. My father flew Boeings in WWII and this one just seems to be at the top of the heap from that era. If I ever have to do the DC thing again, I will make every effort to see the NRA museaum. I'm sure that would help improve my regional perspective.

At Air and Space, you are so close to the National Firearms Museum where you can see the best sporting shotgun display in the country, the Petersen Room.

Ha, I thought the same thing. It has the dreaded slide-nick I try to avoid.
