I for one am going to disagree with the assertion that the only good Colts were the SAA and the 1911. Colt ruled the target matches with their Officers Models when they were being shot with revolvers.
Additionally the Model 1903 semi-auto was such a good design it's been put back into production. Here's an example circa 1920 in my own collection which is essentially in new in the box condition.

When it comes to newer semi-auto models IMO S&W wins hands down. Their 3rd generation pistols have been rapidly increasing in price as collectibles as well as values as carry guns. I personally carry a S&W Model 4006 in 40 S&W and have found nothing newer that I prefer.
