I just picked up my new duck gun for 2007 two weeks ago. It's a 1950 Remington 870 with the deluxe wood and a 28" modified, "turkey foot" barrel.(barrel is plain but matted)

It's in 99% condition and cost less than a flat of Kent TM. I plan to use it with steel and while I could just put another barrel on, I'd like to use it with the matted plain one it came with.

My concern is with the forcing cones. Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I lengthen them before shooting steel or do the cones not matter. The choke is right around 20 points so I don't think it will be an issue.

Thanks

Tim

Since steel shot does not deform much, if at all, the questionable advantage claims for long forcing cones would not be very important, IMO.

I guess I was more concerned about the rate of constriction. I once saw a Spanish SxS with a bulge right in front of the cone and wondered if it wasn't from steel.

Tim,

FWIW, I have a an 870 Wingmaster of '69 vintage, I think, serial # S2113XX-V, a 3" 12ga. that gets used for ducks w/steel shot. It does not have the fortune to be wearing anything more than a plain full choked bbl. and it has been shot and carried enough that the checquering is worn fairly smooth in some places. The bbl is unaltered and unrecalled and it shows no signs of distress whatsoever, no choke ring-bulges, no pressure rings in front of the chamber, no nothing. I don't know exactly how many steel rounds have been through that bbl. but at a minimum several flats .. as in over five. I would not worry about the forcing cones in your gun at all. Also, I found to the contrary of what was being published that if you want full choke patterns from steel at 40 yards on the plate then you should use full choke constrictions .. that is using steel shot sizes of #3 & #4, all that I use, except for some #7 steel target loads that I use as swatter loads, when they are required. Having said that about the 40 yard patterns, try & keep your shots inside 35 yds. w/steel, if you can. I sometimes set the outermost blocks & 'flankers' with a laser range finder at roughly 35yds. Its an inexact science, ya know;-)

Thanks. I have a 90s 870 that I use with steel but it has quite a long forcing cone so that was what brought the question up. For years I shot BB steel through an old Stevens, before I even knew enough to be concerned. It was IC and MOD but I'm sure it had short cones as well.

I'm quite fond of 3 steel, I've even taken quite a few geese with 3s over decoys. More pellets for head, neck and wing hits.

Tim
