I've never seen a 700 with 3" chambers. I think you're right: Only for the 20ga magnums. And I'm not positive, but I think all of those may have been 720's. Likely a concession made to the American market, given the popularity of the 3" 20ga back then.

My late Purdey bar in iron hammer pigeon gun left the factory with 2 3/4" chambers and 1 1/4 ounce proof. I have seen many Purdeys with 3" chambers.
