You might want to make sure it was not annealed before they polished it up. It could be a project that never got off the ground beyond getting it ready to be engraved.

I bought an LC Smith "in the white" and when I took it to my engraver he said the metal was as soft as butter.

I turned that into a crown grade style upgrade. I could justify the expense because they has already spent $$$ on new wood.
