How hot do sxs barrels get when shooting a round of trap doubles (50 targets)?

Interesting question, and I may invest in an ebay infrared thermometer for this summer. When shooting skeet at Ben Avery in the summer the barrels are too hot to touch by Station 4.
The ASTM standard for Thermal Pain Threshold (and when tissue damage starts) is 111 F or 44 C.

There is too hot to hold and then there is enough to cause 1, 2, and 3 degree burns. I have shot a 30 inch twist barrel in a singles trap on a hot summer day and it has been far too hot to touch but I don't think enough to give me a first degree burn. That was using 3 drams BP and 1 1/8 oz

I can't begin to guess actual temperatures, but I have run shells through a 687 SPII at the rate of one shell every 6.7 seconds for three hours straight. The barrels get very hot, and you're better off using a glove on the forward hand, but no barrel problems.

This rate of shooting is not a place for a splinter f/end. It is imperative that you keep your bare fingers off the barrels themselves.

I'm using my second pair of Gripswell SxS shooting gloves with the SxS specific heat guard on the left glove and love them. Too bad they went out of business.

I just got two pair of the side by side gloves from them six months ago.

I shoot with gloves on both hands when shooting. I use leather batting gloves and cut off the trigger finger at the end. They are cheap and durable and provide a good grip. Since I grip the barrels, not the forend, they protect me from barrel heat and help control the gun in recoil.

For cold weather bird hunting I have a pair of thnsulate lined deerskin gloves.

I tried the slip on leather hand protector but didn't like it at all.

Like Hammergun I tried the slip on leather hand guard and did not like it. Although I did find a weighted hand guard useful on a very barrel light 16; I got rid of the gun.

I regularly wear a Orvis upland glove on my left hand whether hunting or shooting clays year round. When cold I use the thin gloves on both hands; when very cold I sometimes wear a fleece mitten over the left hand glove.

Ultimately everyone is different and shooters need to experiment with what works best for them.

My weekly shooting practice is a couple of rounds of five stand, usually as fast as I can shoot them. That is normally just enough to insure I do not lose any of my bad shooting habits.

My double barrels get too hot to be comfortable so I keep an old greasy left handed canvas/leather faced work glove handy in the shell bag on my hip. I don't know how hot the barrels get, but when they do warm up the work glove keeps things comfortable for me...Geo

Anyone use Nomex flight gloves? I used to use a pair as hunting gloves when I was younger. This thread jogged my memory. I think I'll buy another pair, less than $15 on Ebay, available in several colors.

For years I have used golf gloves as shooting gloves. Cheap, last a good amount of time, wet does not cause problems with the dye in them, comfortable and thin enough to pickup small or thin things easily.

I buy a dozen rights and lefts at a time. They are sold as singles, right or left. My sons use the same size as I do so they go faster than you'd think. Nice clean set for the gun club, dirtier set for the field and worst set for a spare in the field box. That field box has saved many a hunt. Extra gloves, extra ear plugs, extra shell bags or vest, extra socks, extra hats. You name it and it is most likely in that box. And yes there are extra shooting gloves of all three degrees of use. It even has a few extra shells in there.

As a general rule I do not use issue gear when hunting. While NOMEX gloves are good, I find the thin leather Orvis Upland gloves best

Some military gear works pretty well. The arctic boots, trigger finger mittens, and insulated field pants come in handy when you're blocking on a late season deer hunt. All my active duty stuff is long gone, but gear is readily available as surplus. I find a web belt with a canteen comes in handy on hot days, and does bring back memories.

Thanks for the update on Gripswell, as I just contacted them and was told that they are making them again after being down for awhile. Several months ago they weren't even answering the phone. I called Fieldsport to let them know so they could order them again, as they sold very well. Now that I can just call them and place an order for them, I'll just do that instead. I'm very happy to know they are around again, thanks for the info.

I also use GripSwells, in fact bought one from them within the last 6 months, too. I actually prefer one glove on the left hand. I might use both in a high-volume situation. After about 5 rounds of sporting clays, the index finger suede leather separated from the thinner leather glove portion. Cheaper to re-stitch than mail back for repair. On their website, they listed WHITE as the only choice, so I ordered it, but put "would prefer brown" in the info box. Voila, a brown one appeared on my doorstep.

A barrel guard will eventually remove the bluing from barrels...I have a SxS to prove it.

I have thought about the barrel guard solution, but have heeded the warnings about them posted on the threads. I really like my Gripswells, so will be replacing them with a new pair soon.
