Jim: I guess we just have a different assessment. Neither look legit to me-but I could be wrong. Would certainly be interested in Kearcher's or Merrington's opinions.

The 1st image came from the Drake website where they have that 8-bore for sale. They describe it as faux damascus.

I have handled such guns and they are obvious once you become aware of possibility. In some cases, the exterior was actually painted on.

1900 would be a bit late for the faux damascus, but not impossible. By then the Belgian law strictly forbid any barrels that were faked to marked as damascus.

The picture looks like the result of the Sachs Patent #410678, method of ornamenting barrels.

There's nothing shady about faux damascus twist barrel finishes on contemporary guns. It's simply an embellishment to recreate an old gun. I've seen plenty of contemporary flint fowlers by very respected builders with this treatment. Misrepresentation is another thing entirely tho. If someone gets taken by a faux twist finish, he has not seen much of the real deal.

I believe that Westley Richards could fool most eyes.

Reading the description on Lewis Drake's site explains the puzzlement. It has a modern steel replacement barrel, by Mike Ehinger, a maker of reproduction flintlock, among other things. No reason to think a Westley Richards gun CAME with fake barrels, originally. I've had only one, my first old hammer gun, a very cheap Belgian clunker. The pattern continued from one barrel, across the under rib and around the other barrel. Looked like it had been painted on with a whisk broom.

The 1900 I looked at had the typical chain damascus pattern, not twist. I tend to agree that it was some kind of marketing ploy, because as soon as he said it was fake damascus, he then said it would handle nitro loads. When I then said I actually preferred damascus, he got quiet.

I think it was the real thing, because it was really quacking and walking like a duck.

Revdocdrew:
I must disabuse you of any thoughts that the Schilling gun has faux Damascus barrels.
This guns was, not so long ago, in my stable. I can assure you that the barrels are Damascus that was acid etched.
It must be that your pic was one that I posted on the BBS and was lifted. Perhaps not, as others from this master are known.
A friend is now the owner of this most beautiful Damascus barreled gun.
Best,
John
