If you cut spar varnish 50/50 with mineral spirits that's about what Tru-oil is. I will say it's a good product and you don't have to buy an entire quart just to finish a stock.
Judge, I think your version of Tru Oil is close but I also believe there is linseed oil in it.
Spar varnish was used by bamboo fly rod builders and still used on bamboo rods that are not impregnated. I have done a few myself and in doing the spar varnish is cut and applied with a camel hair brush. Some of the old makers dipped theirs (Garrison is one). It takes spar varnish very long to fully cure but it is very flexible and does not crack or peel. Looks great when used over light yellow silk windings with no color preserver on it, the windings come out translucent and you can see the guides feet.

Hi Stan, I wonder if the true oil I'd put on hadn't hardened properly yet and it clogged up the tools rather than blunted them ? That's a nice job on your gun by the way.

JDW -- you're right it has some linseed, how much I don't know. I know if you mix spar, linseed and paint thinner 1-1-1 the finish is slightly softer than Tru-oil.
Stan-- love that Fox.

Tru-Oil certainly smells like it contains some linseed oil.
I think the secret is not the type of oil as much as the exact application.

Thanks El Garro and Judge. That Fox is just a Sterly ejector that I bought as a project gun. It had been restocked (butt only), but it looked nothing like original Fox wood so I took the rasps and files to it to make it suit my taste a bit better. I posted this little pictorial essay on the redo over on the Fox Collectors website a few months ago. Anyone interested can access it here. http://www.foxcollectors.com/My%20Forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=7229 SRH
