The gun is a post-war (Eckernforde) JP Sauer & Sohn Model 54 BBF. I'm trying to determine its age.

From what I gather so far from the interweb, it was proofed at Kiel between 1951-1971. Could the year be as obvious as 1959?

ninepointer, there should be the month, as with this example from 9/54:

Thanks GW and SX. It was the PMT site and a couple others which took me as far as I was able to get. Can't find that third digit anywhere on the limited surface area of the O/U "flats". But 59 would seem to fit as the year, as the digits are in the right location and they fit within the proof mark and production time spans.

59 is the year as the month was "usually" applied by not required. Required marks were the Eagle w/ appropriate character/letter, mark of the proof facility(Eckernförde as Oak leaf from 1952) & the year of proof, sometimes w/ the month. I believe it was 1968 that saw the use of characters for the year. Also me thinks Eckernförde was a satellite stamping station & Ford has some additional info.

I think Eckernfoerde had it's own mark. The proof house at Melrichstadt(?) was a satellite of Munich and used Munich's mark.

Indeed Ford, that's for which I was searching. Wasn't it in either Ostheim or Mellrichstadt(Bavarian portion of Germany) where you were pegged as of Bavarian origin? Was the proof facility within Heym's umbrella?

Eckernfoerde is a satellite of proof house Kiel, the mark is an oak leaf. Since 1968 they use the mark of Kiel, the nettle leaf.

"In Schleswig-Holstein gehört das Beschusswesen zum Geschäftsbereich der Eichdirektion
Nord in Kiel mit der Beschussstelle Eckernförde.
Weitere Beschussämter gibt es in Baden-Württemberg (Ulm), Bayern (München und
Mellrichstadt), Niedersachsen (Hannover), Nordrhein-Westfalen (Köln) und Thüringen
(Suhl). "

Oh, I now see that Eckernförde was a satellite stamping station.

Raimey,
The proof house wasn't under Heym, but it did proof their guns, among other makers.
