I also shot factory shells that were shorter than the box noted. These were Fiocchi dove and quail that actually measured 2-5/8" In fact, I reload them as 2-5/8 inch shells. When I first went to reload them I noticed my crimp would not fold correctly...because the cases were short!

My reloads are light 7/8 ounce shot that I use in several 16 gauges, including two with 2-1/2" chambers.

I have never found cases that were longer than specified by the manufacturer.

Brass, paper or Plastic, they all fit chambers having the same dimensions.
They do not of course all have the same thickness of walls, so predominately the "Interiors" change. Of course if you measure a big enough pile of the different "New" shells you will find variance of actual size among them all due to manufacturing tolerances. I would feel likely you would find some of "Each" type which were bigger than some of the other types.

A bigger issue than chamber length is the angle of the forcing cones. Many older guns have steep angle forcing cones for use with fiber wads and paper hulls. Relieving the angle of the cones will allow the chamber length to remain as is.

As to the length of some European loaded ammo, it may measure 67.5mm instead of 70 mm (2 3/4"). Example--BP F2s measure 67.5mm. As many black rem sp.

jOe, I think Tom wants to know if the added thickness of a paper shell was noticed on the ID or the OD of that shell
.I would think the outside diameter would be normal, but the inside capacity a wee bit thinner due to thicker wall.
Perhaps they split the difference smile
Anyone know?
cheers
