Well, Ted, maybe you don't have to go that far...

The dark side is, I believe, the false demand leading to gross overpricing for decent quality guns.
Serious collecting, involving taxonomy and thematic grouping etc is rare. Serious collecting also involves opening the collection to genuine researchers. Instead there is undisciplined hoarding for its own sake.

Investment is a myth. One thousand dollars in 1964 could buy an English best, worth about 10 000 today if in mint condition. The same sum invested in Buffet's Berkshire fund would be worth over 10 MILLION today. Historical Dow Jones figures show that if you invested in index linked funds you would be way better off than with collectibles for capital appreciation, while earning annual dividends too.

Also a simple legislative change can erase the value of any item needing a license to own. Ask British and Australian collectors about that one following legal changes in those countries.

So true. Last time it was buy back, meaning that the Gov't paid money for guns. They got some very good ones cheap & some rubbish dear. I do not believe that they can afford that again & next time it will be just back with no "buy" in it. That is a dark side to a gun collection that you need a licence from the Weapons Licensing branch of the police force so that you may posses the guns. O.M

The exceptions seem to be French guns. I like French guns but sometimes think I'm the only one that does.

You are not alone, Kemo Sabe. Gil +1 Makes 4 of us. Just picked up a Chapuis OU this month. I paid a little less than half of what the original buyer paid for it in 2013. Worked for me!

I think it was eightbore who said there was no way to have all of the guns at once, but it might be possible to own them all, if only at a time.

The dark side of gun collecting???
Isn't that the left rear of my safe, under the rack, where little light gets to? I can never see what's there.

That's the dark side of gun collecting that really bugs me.

Ooops, I was wrong.
The dark side of gun collecting is when the cat gets out of the bag and a bunch of you yahoos start singing the praises of those high quality but reasonably priced French guns.

Sheesh!

Not sure where they find them. The last one I have seen was SLE by Guyot for $12,000. While quality and condition were good it was not what I would consider cheap. The only one I expect to see with high price would be piece from certain maker at Rue Saint-Roch 21. I will keep the name to myself for now. | | |
