I don't know why I try to give the impression I'm a duck hunter. My most embarrassing moments in hunting have happened while duck hunting. My early ancestors must have been of an aquatic nature because every time I get near water I devise a way to fall in or step into it. Part of the problem is duck hunting involves large strong dogs. Take a pup you are training. If he is green upland dog he will bump birds. He'll get over it. But a retriever if they are green they can blow through the blind before the ducks are in range destroying what I spent two hours in the dark building and scatter the assorted crap we duck hunters accumulate into the water. Pretty much ruining the hunt. Dog farts, I never notice them farting around the house, but in a duck blind they can make your eyes water. I'm sitting in a duck blind, cold, wet, muddy and the the dog starts farting. I can't help but ask myself "Why am I here" I've had a dog yank me off a dike and I fell 20 ft. Fortunately I was young then and only bruised my ego. That fall would kill me now. And why do I always need to take a dump at dawn when the shooting can start and the ducks are coming in, the blind is built and I'm all trust up in my waders. Then I've been so cold my fingers stuck to the gun.

I got so pissed I swore never to hunt another duck and sold my SBE. I instantly regretted that and regret it to this day.

Wood Ducks they are so pretty, but tasty. I spot a pair of wood ducks on a pond. I always carry a duck cannon with me so I shoot the male and cook him. Then I keep noticing the hen staying on the pond waiting for the male to return. It turns out these Wood Ducks were the rancher's wife's pets. I felt like a complete heel and haven't been able to shoot a Wood Duck since.

Ducks are better off if I'm not out aggravating them.

You're not alone Pooch, I had a canoe that was so unstable that a couple of times it would put me and my gun in the water. It got to the point that I was thinking about bringing some soap and shampoo because I might as well take a bath since I'm in here.

I thought I had a skill at boxing and thought it a way to work my way through school doing smokers. It didn't work at all, I was terrible and everybody beat me up. Yet I miss it still. Same thing with duck hunting. Terrible conditions and yet I miss it. I don't know if it because somebody knocked something loose in my head for me to miss these two sports or is it because it feels so good when you quit.

This is hard for me to understand, unless you have never hunted ducks in flooded green timber.

Restricted? What do you want to do, shoot them sitting down or lying down? There are only so many shooting positions that are possible with a shotgun.

Boring? Boring is sitting in a tree stand waiting for a big buck to work a scrape line.

You are trying to out lie a duck hunter. Forget it there is no way. Duck hunters are as bad as golfers.

There are countless ways to shoot a duck. I've shot a duck while being dragged by a dog. I've shot one and reloaded while sliding down a hill on my back. I've shot ducks while in the water, from boats, lying on my back, lying on my stomach, sitting, crouched even standing. I've shot from the shoulder and from the hip. Duck hunting can go from boring to frantic in a heart beat. I, like most, people limit out on the first or second flight. Then unlike most people, I put the gun away and watch. I like to watch ducks, they are fun to watch. Watch their habits, their feeding cycle. You learn about ducks by watching them.

I only did a limited amount of Duck hunting, but what I did was all done with a double, I never felt handicapped by it. I used an FE Lefever & yes I went under water once with it in my hands. I just brought it home, took it apart & cleaned, dried & re-oiled it, good as it was before.
Nash Buckingham hunted Ducks with a Double, good enough recommendation for me.
I simply have no desire what-so-ever to own either a pump or a semi-auto. "IF" I hunt it I'll hunt it with a double, & it'll be a side by side, not one of those stinking under-overs. Anyone who doesn't want to hunt with me because I'm using a double can Stay Home, Nuff Said.

I've duck hunted with a double also, but found it limiting for the type hunting I was doing. It's all a matter of what a person enjoys.

The vast majority of all the duck hunting I've done has been with my Citori. I cannot imagine a gun I would enjoy more. And mind you I have hunted with and currently own all manner of pump, auto and even bolt action duck guns.

Duck hunting is a hobby if you enjoy it more with a double then do it. You don't have to worry about hunting with me. I've decided it's time to sell my decoys and face the fact I'm too old and too beat up to hunt ducks.

I kinda thought that was what was at the bottom of all this. I hope the good memories someday outweigh all the bad for you.
